Would You? 5 Unusual Ways To Personalise Your Wedding

Décor & Flowers

Are you on the lookout for something unusual for your special day? We love personalised weddings, here at WOL… and frankly, we can’t get enough of all the quirky, fun ideas couples come up with. Here are five of our most recent faves – would you draw on your dress, have your shoes painted, or turn your face into a stamp? Take a look.

1. Angelina Jolie’s dress

Trust Angie to do something her own way, she’s never been the one to follow convention! We have to admit, it was a bit of a surprise to see her wearing such a traditional-looking white wedding dress… we were expecting something along the lines of ‘only she could pull it off’. But then, she turned around, and there it was – dozens of drawings done by her children. Whether you loved or hated it, you have to admit it was most unusual and quite touching. Her kids must have loved it.

So, would you take the plunge and do something similar with your dress or veil? You can get as creative as you like, and of course there’s no need to draw all over, à la newly minted Mrs Jolie-Pitt. You could have a small design along the edge of your dress, or just on your veil. You could have coloured beads, sequins or pearls added to any part of your outfit. You could tie long trailing ribbons to your bouquet, and have drawings on those.

If you don’t yet have children of your own, you could ask any kids who are going to be a part of your wedding to contribute. Or, you can ask an artistically talented guest or bridesmaid to create something unusual on an item of your choice. The possiblities are endless. Will Angelina’s idea turn into a big trend? Only time will tell. But the loveliest thing of all is that she did it from the heart.

2. One of a kind shoes

If you don’t want to draw on the dress or veil, how about personalising your shoes? There are several artists who do it (like Figgie and Beautiful Moment, below), and the results are nothing short of breathtaking. The traditional white bridal shoes become stunning and unique keepsakes, and it’s you who decides what goes on them. The most popular things are names, wedding dates, and favourite quotes. The artwork can literally be anything – from delicate flowers and lace patterns, to cartoon characters and miniature portraits. We’re pretty sure this is the one wedding memento you’ll be keeping forever and ever. What would you like your shoes to say?

 3. Huge flower instead of bouquet

We’ve seen this amazing alternative to a wedding bouquet as far back as 2011 – and we expect to see plenty more next year. Just look at these stunning flowers – you can’t help but notice them! That brilliant splash of colour will liven up your walk down the aisle, your wedding photos, and probably your living room too, long after the wedding. We can certainly guarantee all the guests will notice you. Needless to say, this suits a bride who’s not afraid to make a big, bold statement in the name of fun. And if you’re about to say ‘it’s probably expensive to buy, or hard to make’, just take a look at this tutorial – the basic skills you need are cutting paper and wrapping twine around a stick. Could this be your ideal floral expression?

4. Put a stamp on it

We love love love this quirky little idea – so very sweet and unusual! Have a couple stamp made from a photo – or two individual stamps – and use them on your wedding correspondence, stationery, or anything else you fancy. You can even continue using it as a married couple for many years to come. It’s an inexpensive single purchase, and doesn’t take long at all – you can get them made from Lilimandrill in just five days. Would you put your face on a stamp?

5. Printable table placemats

Placemats at a wedding? Don’t they belong in the kitchen? Well, if you’re after something completely unusual for your tables, then this may be your answer. Just as carefully chosen placemats at a dinner table add a gorgeous touch of elegance, splash of colour, or enhance a theme, they can do the same at a wedding. You can choose a lovely message for your guests, a meaningful quote, quirky artwork, or even your initials. To take it one step further, you can print your favourite pattern or image in black and white, and colour it in with your medium of choice – crayons, watercolours or markers. If you’re having kids at your wedding, you could even ask them to help out – what a fabulous way to involve them. You can get as creative as you like in this space – will you?
