6 Kooky Ways to make your Wedding Attire Awesomely Alternative

Fashion & Jewellery

Most wedding blog enthusiasts out there will already be aware of the many ways to add something ‘a bit different’ to their wedding attire. The most popular options for couples include a pair of snazzy socks for the groom, bridesmaids in mis-matched dresses and a pair of funky and colourful statement heels for the bride herself. But what if one wishes to ‘up the ante’ on their wedding wear? The most kooky among us need to represent our personalities in our getup on our Big Day, after all. So how to go about it while still keeping it chic and stylish? Here’s six of our sassiest suggestions…

1. Bridesmaids in Tights

The perfect accessory for an autumn/winter wedding is a pair of cosy, colourful or otherwise statement-making tights. If you’re going for an informal look for your maids, a pair of neutral toned or lace tights are a cute way to add something a bit different to the girls’ rigouts – and save on the fake tan while you’re at it! Another super sweet idea is a pair of ‘love seam tights‘ like these ones from Pamela Mann (pictured above). Now, these can either look a bit risqué or just the right side of kooky – it all depends on the dress. Go for below the knee and floaty if you want to keep it cute and pretty. Retro or 50s style weddings however can throw caution to the wind and go full on burlesque style with these – as we always say; it’s your wedding, do it your way!

2. Windmill Bouquets

The alt bouquet du jour is the brooch bouquet – a spectacular piece of glitz and glamour and a true heirloom to treasure for years – but for those looking to create a fun and carefree atmosphere for their day, why not carry a bouquet of windmills (or pinwheels as they’re known in the US)?! This rather unusual idea is a great option for couples looking to create a funfair style day (think ice cream van after the ceremony, personal popcorn for the kids, a colourful marquee) and makes for great photos! A little windmill makes a cute boutonnière, while bridesmaids could carry large colourful ones instead of traditional floral bouquets and you could even make it a theme unto itself with windmill name cards for guests, giant mills as centrepieces, mini mills as drink decorations and maybe even cute DIY pinwheel cake toppers!

3. Oversized Headdresses

We love a bride who goes all out on a headpiece, and are particularly in love with Grecian style hair jewellery and gorgeous vintage-inspired Juliet caps at the moment. While the Dove feather style headpiece pictured above might not go down well with the Priest on your Big Day (and, if we’re honest, probably 99% of the guests too) why not add something a bit wild for your photos after? Take it down a notch with a statement style Juliet cap veil – the Delphine Manivet creation pictured on the left is just a dream and, for those with true and innate alternative style who can carry it off, it will be the bridal style statement of the century. More subdued brides can still go a bit unconventional with the increasingly popular floral crown – just make sure your buds are big and colourful and you’ll be the belle of the alt ball.

4. Vintage Flatcaps

There’s no need for the groom not to get his kook on when it comes to the Big Day you know! We touched on boutonnières with our mini windmills already but another unexpected accessory a groom can sport on the Big Day is a dashing gentleman’s cap. Rustic, informal outdoor weddings are perfect for this style – obviously this is going to look way out of place at a black tie wedding in the Ritz – and of course it will only look good if you’re completely comfortable in it (read: you wear hats every now and again). We also love a crisp bowler and are prone to swoon over a carefully styled top hat every now and again.

5. Cool Cons

You know we love our heels here at weddingsonline but some girls simply want to be cool and comfy when they take that long walk down the aisle – and anything over an inch is going to make them feel awkward and tense during one of the most memorable moments of the day! Fret not those of you who fear the heel – they’re your feet and you can wear whatever you darn well please on them! Cute colourful Cons are a nice way to add a bit of personality to wedding attire and will make your guests smile when they get a glimpse of them – they also mean you might be the last one on the dance floor on the night! We love the white tulle ‘laces’ on the Cons pictured above, which give a cute bridal feel to the trainers, but our favourite has to be custom hand painted wedding converse like these ones from Etsy seller BStreetShoes (in fact, even if you don’t wear them for the wedding, you need these cons in your life).

PS You can also design your own custom Converse on the official Converse site at create.converse.co.uk.

6. Bright Grooms

Grooms – don’t be afraid of colours and don’t for a second think wedding suits are all about black and beige no matter what anyone tells you! Muted shades of red, moss greens, cobalt blues – anything goes for a dapper wedding suit these days. If a full block of colour is a little scary for either you or your OH, maybe try a colourful jacket instead? We love a velvet green groom’s jacket every now and then (and matched with a bride’s green velvet turban style headband? Gorge), especially for an autumn/winter affair. We advise you to keep the accessories to a minimum (you don’t want to ruin that fabric with a boutonnière!) but if you’re feeling the need to add some extra moxie to your getup, you can always add a hat!
