Ask the Experts – Should I send ‘save-the-dates’?

Décor & Flowers, Planning & Advice

I wasn’t going to bother with save-the-date cards, but so many people are booking holidays way ahead of time these days. Should I send them or will I just look like I’m jumping the gun… my wedding isn’t until 2015! – Kate

Remember, the idea of save-the-date cards is to make sure as many of your family and friends as possible make it to your wedding, by giving them plenty of notice to make travel arrangements, take time off work, or simply turn down other invitations for that day.

Reasons for sending save-the-date cards in addition to formal invitations:

• Your wedding is abroad.

• You have a lot of out-of-town guests – you can send them the cards first so they can take advantage of travel deals, book flights, and make any other necessary plans sooner rather than later. In these circumstances, it’s not uncommon to send save-the-date cards as much as twelve months in advance.

• You are getting married in peak wedding season.

• You are getting married on a weekday.

As you can see, not ALL your guests will need to receive save-the-date cards but they can be a good idea for certain guests!

You can never be too organised for a wedding! I feel it will guarantee all your favourite people can make it if you send save-the-dates. But it is too soon to send them now (one year to nine months is the usual time frame), which is great as it gives you more time to think of what you want them to look like!

Save-the-dates can be an inexpensive and a nice touch, and as you have the time, I’d say – why not! Fun postcards are a simple and effective idea and create some excitement for the upcoming event! Or, you can let everyone know by call, text or do it the modern way and send an e-vite. Happy planning!

This is such a popular trend nowadays, and save-the-dates are very effective especially if you are getting married abroad. If you’re not going abroad then not only are you letting people know in plenty of time about your special day, but you are also giving them a chance to arrange time off work, babysitters and above all else – time to save!
