All you need is a pretty plate and brownies! You can bake them yourself a few days before the wedding (they keep well in an airtight container) or order in bulk from a local bakery or even supermarket – it won’t cost a fortune. For a touch of fun, use icing to match your wedding colours, or decorate with a few strawberries or grapes. Not only will everyone love having a nibble to hand, you won’t have to worry about favours either. Win!

A bowl of fruit

Ideal for a summer, autumn, rustic, DIY or eco wedding, fruit is inexpensive and colourful. You can put it on anything, even on a pretty doily, and it’ll always look great. It may be a good idea to ask the venue if they have bowls available for the tables. Hit your local market or fruit stall to make the best selection that won’t cost the earth, and it’s your choice whether you want to mix it up a bit or stick to one kind.

Old books

Books come in all shapes and colours – all you’ll need is around 3 per table and you’re set! You’ll find inexpensive books at charity shops and carboot sales, and you can choose what to go for – specific colours, romantic titles, or simply that well-loved look. Atop, perch a single jar with a candle, a frame with the table number or a photo of the two of you, a large DIY paper flower, or even an apple and a pear. You can give the books to your guests after the wedding, or donate them back to your local charity shop. If you’re having a literary-themed or vintage wedding, or you simply love to read, this is the one for you.

Painted mason jars

Mason jars come in loads of sizes, so they’re perfect no matter the size of the tables. Start collecting well in advance and you’ll have plenty ready by the time your wedding day comes around. Decorating them is easy-peasy – all you need is acrylic paint in a colour of your choice (click here for a super easy painted jar tutorial), and of course some flowers to put inside – if you’re going for a budget option, use baby’s breath, simple daisies, carnations or even paper flowers. This is a perfect choice for a more informal wedding.

Paper lanterns

They’re so inexpensive and come in lots of sizes – you can even find them at your local IKEA! You can buy them online in bulk in every colour of the rainbow, or buy white and delicately spray paint in a colour of your choice. This option isn’t used very often, as most people hang lanterns instead of putting them on tables, so this is your perfect idea if you want something unusual. You can simply place your lantern in the middle of the table, or add a vase with some flowers or a candle holder for beautiful soft light.
