David Fielden (davidfielden.co.uk) has spent the past few years both scaring and exciting me in equal measure. For all the collections that come across my desk each season, his is the one I look forward to the most. Master of the modern sheath dress, Fielden has featured prominently in the modern phenomenon of the wedding ‘It dress’ (you probably heard of Fielden’s Grace Kelly and Wallis Simpson dresses before you set foot in a bridal store, or perhaps even before you saw your engagement ring?)
My favourite thing about Fielden’s collections is that you don’t quite know how it will ever work. On the runway he wants to shake us up a little; rosette helmets and minimal chic in 2010, skull caps on a builders’ site in 2012. The collection is comprised of modern, elegant silhouettes in one corner, and futuristic and fun shapes in another. Each employ luxurious fabrics, with sumptuous draping preferred on the ultra plush sheath dresses and romantic detailing on the a-line styles to create a snow-queen-esque look. It’s hard to imagine any of these gowns on a real life bride, but, and I speak from experience here, they do work, and work spectacularly well.
