A is for… Art Deco
Seeing some of the wedding dresses shimmying down the catwalks this year was almost like being transported back in time. The distinctive art deco style or the early-to-mid 1900s (20s, 30s, 40s) had a clear influence over the entire Jenny Packham (above) collection, while other designers such as Badgley Mischka, Yolan Cris and Amanda Wakeley hinted towards the pre and post prohibition era with statement sheaths and sparkling a-lines. Look for drop waisted, hand beaded, flapper style gowns to emulate the look, and top with a statement headband or 20’s style veil. We love Irish designer Bonzie’s take on 20’s glamour with their intricate lace headbands and veils.
B is for… Backs
Time to get those hand weights out ladies! The most prominent feature occurring again and again on bridal catwalks for 2013 was the statement back. Devastatingly detailed at Claire Pettibone (above) and Marchesa, daringly low at Inbal Dror and Patrick Casey, and structured yet sexy at Reem Acra and Manuel Mota, the back is a POI for every designer this year.

C is for… Colour Blush
Blush has been on the bridal radar for a while now, and we’re pinning its emergence directly on slebs. Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Biel both stunned in their candy floss like blush dresses at their respective weddings, and as they say, ‘as the slebs go, so goes the nation’ (okay, they don’t say that, but it’s kinda true). This year we saw blush creeping in in delicate ribbons at Novia D’art, in floral embellishments at Claire Pettibone, and full on at Monique Lhuillier (‘Dream’), Novia D’art (‘Valentino’ pictured left) and Rosa Clara (‘Bosco’ pictured right).
D is for… Detail
The devil is in the detail when it comes to wedding dresses for 2013, and we were SPOILED ROTTEN with some painfully beautiful detailing in this year’s bridal offerings. While there were plenty of ‘blink and you’ll miss it’ details on the runway (luscious lace straps, pretty floral sashes, intricately scalloped necklines), there was also plenty of ‘slap you in the face’ detailing to take in. Again Claire Pettibone (above, centre) lead the way with her floral embellished colourful backs, while we saw some incredible hand beading at Jenny Packham, statement shoulder straps at Marchesa, Swarovski accents at Enzoani (‘Hadiya’) and floral bodices at Elie Saab Couture (above, left).
E is for… Enzoani
Strong, bold silhouettes were typified by US design house Enzoani this year and honestly, there wasn’t one gown in their collection that we didn’t fall completely in love with. Under chief designer Kang Chun Kin’s eager eye, the ultimate in structured silhouettes were perfectly balanced with delicate lace bodices, soft feathered skirts and dreamy draping. F is for… Floral
Flowers are the embellishments du jour for 2013, with nature’s most delicate offerings presenting themselves in a variety of designs in the majority of bridal collections. In one of this year’s catwalk ‘moments’, Manuel Mota closed the Pronovias show with a show stopper of a dress – a silk organza floral skirted, hi-low hemline with a train that would make Princess Diana’s wedding dress look like something for the office (okay, maybe just for the WeddingsOnline office). We loved Carol Hannah‘s (above, right) ridiculously romantic Spring/Summer 2013 collection, which used floral detailing in the most enchanting ways.
G is for… Grecian
This is without doubt one of our favourite trends in bridal and it looks to be high on the list of faves for some of the top bridal designer’s also! The goddess was represented in all her glory in the collections from Temperley London (Goddess dress, top right from Beatrice collection), Jesus Peiro (bottom right), Marchesa et al for 2013, and we can’t get enough of their glorious draping, gold embellishments and soft silk finishes. H is for… Hemlines
Tea length at Rosa Clara (pictured), ballet style at Stephanie Allin (‘Masquerade’), to-the-knee at Amsale (the crazy chic ‘Bowry’) hi-low at Manuel Mota and mini at Reem Acra, there’s not a hemline that wasn’t attempted for bridal this year. We’re certainly in the ‘anything goes’ stage of wedding dresses at the moment. So whether you want a cutesy 50s style skirt, a chic pencil dress or a train as long at the aisle, you’ll be on trend for 2013!

J is for… Jackets
Prim and proper buttoned up jackets brought structure and symmetry to the incredibly elegant 2013 Rosa Clara collection (pictured), and we think this trend is one to be picked up by brides who want their cover-up to carry a bit of gravitas this year. Long and short sleeved fitted jackets are bang on trend for between-season brides who are planning to channel a bit of Jackie O on the day. Pair with some oversized sunnies if the winter sun is a’blazing and make your look memorable for all the right reasons!
K is for… Katya Katya Sherina
Drogheda based bridal rooms Frilly Frocks became the exclusive stockists of Latvian designer Katya Katya Shehurina last year, and we are expecting the collection to be a breath of fresh air for Irish brides. Find out more about these feminine, playful gowns here.
L is for… Lace
Lace was simply everywhere on the catwalks for 2013. It was wall to wall lace. Voluminous veils, feminine bodices, elegant sleeves and full luscious lace gowns, the fabric of the moment was used in every which way. Clearly another of the ‘Kate effects’, this trend just ain’t letting up for 2013. To see it done to perfection, check out Temperley London’s 2013 Florence collection.
M is for… Mummified
So we didn’t quite know what to call this trend, but we noticed this wrapped-up-tight bandeau style in several of the top designer’s collections for 2013 (Pronovias on the left, Monique Lhuillier‘s daring and painfully beautiful ‘Forever’ on the right). It’s very much the ‘body con’ of bridal, with soft, draped Spanish tulle hugging the curves in all the right places, we can just imagine how confident a bride would feel on her big day, showing off her feminine figure to the fullest!
