Support Group for Cloth Nappy users ....

Postby Finished here » Sat Jul 25, 2009 2:51 pm

Who is with me. I've just started using cloth nappies and there is a lot to figure out it would be great to have a sticky like the breastfeeding one to give each other ongoing support and advice.

Well so far ive tried, fuzzi bunz - got covered in poop :-8
imse vimse - way too big for my 9lb boy
motherease - also too big
little comfort - got very wet and pooie - maybe i need more liners, it didnt soak through to clothes thou so this is good
tots bots - soaked right through clothes and all - so i am now using this with a nappy cover and we'll see.
I have used the fleece liners and flushable liners with all the above - some of these nappies ie the tots bots have fleece liners attached and i just wrap the flushable liners around them - is this what you do ?
Anyway ive loads of questions.
When you use the cloth nappies do you have to change the whole thing every time you change babs nappy ?
How often do they leak through to clothes ?
Do the liners protect the nappy from the poo ?
Which cloths are your preferences ?
Which did you use with a newborn ?

Hi FF, I'd be interested in a sticky. Have a sample box of nappies that I really should get around to trying out, it would probably prompt me more to do so if there was a sticky here to remind me!! No doubt I'll have tons of questions when I do start with them so it would be great to have something like the breastfeeding support thread.

Email admin and ask them to make this a sticky!!!

I use fuzzi bunz and find them fantastic. Never once leaked poo. But to be honest until LO started on solids every single disposable i ever used leaked as well. BF poo is very very runny. Its so annoying. She used to destroy her clothes at least once every single day.

I ususally use flushable liners and most of the poo stays on these. I also use fleecy reusable liners sometimes if i think she's not going to poo.

The nappies only last 2-3 hours and you have to be careful that the vest isnt too tight or they will leak. I use vest extenders and find them great.

Y0u have to wash the nappies 5 times to get full absorbency so they will all leak the first few times you use them.

I use the fuzzi's at night with two bamboo boosters from ecobrats.ie and they last all night.

I also use little lambs and they are just as good as fuzzis but more of a pain to use as they are two part nappies.

I wash nappies at 60 degrees with ecover, NO fabric softener allowed!!!

I'll email admin to make this a sticky!!

Yes you should change the full nappy every time. Cellulose liners are best for breast fed poo. I use Fuzzi Bunz with an extra bamboo insert and have no problems. Make sure they are tight enough around the legs and that a bit of liner isn't sticking out.

I'm not all that into stickys actually, I think there are generally far too many on this site but that's probably just me! I find I skip past them to the newer posts, it's like having a post-it stuck up to remind yourself about something, you get so used to it that you don't even see it anymore.

tots bots - soaked right through clothes and all - so i am now using this with a nappy cover and we'll see.Have you got a trial pack with instructions? Just asking cos I started with a rental pack and I hadn't a clue which ones should have covers and which ones didn't need them but there was a couple of pages of instructions, which was very handy. Tots Bots are all two part I think so they will always need a cover. So do Little Comfort.

I have used the fleece liners and flushable liners with all the above - some of these nappies ie the tots bots have fleece liners attached and i just wrap the flushable liners around them - is this what you do ? I would just place the flushable liner over it so it's easier to throw into the toilet without having to touch it.

When you use the cloth nappies do you have to change the whole thing every time you change babs nappy?
You don't always have to change the outside cover if you're using a two-piece system, depending on how wet the nappy was.

How often do they leak through to clothes ?
Rarely but I only started when DS was 5 months so we were past the explosive poo stage, well pretty much anyway. As DQ said, the fit is really important. I started off putting them on too loose. They need to be on quite tight and no white part sticking out. I use vest extenders too, they're great. We have had leaks when DS has been in the buggy for a while or in the car seat, too much pressure on the nappy will cause it to leak. I don't change DS any more frequently than when he was in disposables. We will normally get 3 or more hours out of the nappy.

Do the liners protect the nappy from the poo ?
Not always but the poo almost always comes out on the first wash. Napisan is great, put it in with a tiny bit of powder and it is good for getting stains out. The sun is also good, if we ever saw any of it.

Which cloths are your preferences ?
Fuzzis are great but I prefer a birth to potty nappy from an economical point of view. I love swaddlebees econappi and also bumgenius, although I prefer poppers to velcro, these are just so handy as DS is a nightmare to change so the quicker the better.

We have had no success at night so I have been using disposables at night for a while. I've tried tots bots fluffles and bamboozles at night with wraps or with a wool wrap. The wool wrap worked the best but then stopped working. I must get back into night time again and try and find something that works. I will wait until I have some time off work so I have a few days at home to figure it out when we're not rushing in the morning. It's very time consuming having to change vest and all when he's after getting wet overnight and also not pleasant for DS.

Which did you use with a newborn?
Didn't use any with a newborn. We started when DS was 5 months and the fuzzi bunz or swaddlebees small size was perfect on him then so I imagine it would be ginormous on a newborn.

It takes time to get it right, there is a lot of trial and error involved.

Fuzzi's now do a one size nappy, but they do say themselves that if you are looking for a slim fit nappy one sized ones are no good. I find the fuzzi's very slim fitting, he wears the same trousers with them as he would disposables.

Yes i agree fuzzis are very slim fitting, more so than the little lamb.

At night we use a fuzzi with two bamboo boosters and a fleecy liner, works fine.

Thanks for sticky - wow didn't take long to become one at all.
Loads of info on here that I'm going to sift through now. I've a range of trial packs but thinking of waiting until babs is about 2 wks or so before start on cloth.
I love reading experiences of other mums - esp about nappy brands and what worked for them.

thanks :thnk
