What wedding stationery trends are going to be big for the year ahead? Our stationery experts Kerry Harvey Designs, Appleberry Press and Splash Graphics share their top wedding stationery trends for 2017!

Bespoke Designs – Couples are opting for less off the shelf designs and focusing on creating a design that is unique to them. This could be a simple illustration of where they are getting married, a crest uniting their new names or a beautiful painting depicting their story as a couple. We’re also seeing a lot of light hearted wedding heraldry designs. These are being personalised to the couple to include pets or hobbies, not the traditional kind. Hand drawn or beautifully painted and paired with pretty blooms. There are no rules!
Colour of the Year – Last year we saw many couples turning to the more earthy theme with the use of florals and greenery in their stationery. 2017 will be no different with Pantone just announcing their colour of the year as Greenery – a symbol of new beginnings. Dark moody tones and jewel colours are also on-trend for couples who wish to have a more dramatic effect.
Foiling – At Appleberry Press, we are just loving the trend for foil wedding invitations and this is a trend that is set to continue through 2017. With rose gold, gold, and silver foil still being popular. We’re also seeing the use of tawny matte and mercury. These shades are really beautiful and lift off the page.
Envelope Liners – The envelope liner is the first thing that guests will see upon opening the invitation which is why they have become an important finishing touch. The use of richly decorated envelope liners to accompany a minimalist sophisticated invitation is particularly popular.
Maps – Illustrated maps are becoming a big favourite with couples who are reluctant to send their guests a simple list of directions. They want to add a fun element to their stationery and have even gone as far as thinking up new symbols for their ceremony and venue. Flowers were huge in 2016. Everyone wanted pretty floral elements on their invitations. While flowers and foliage, rustic styles, vintage, watercolour elements and whimsical fonts are still very popular for 2017, we have noticed a huge shift towards a more classical style. Themes are still popular and a travel theme for overseas weddings is still huge – Passport, Boarding Pass, or Luggage Tag style invites. Bespoke invitations that reflect the personalities and lifestyle of the couple (hobbies, interests, pets, children, where they are from) are more popular than ever. More and more couples are displaying their interests and conveying their personality through their wedding.
The time of ribbons, bows and diamante embellishments has definitely passed. Couples are also moving away from cartoony styles and seem to be taking a more serious approach to their stationery. Classic, simple, elegant, designs bordering on a regal style are definitely popular at the moment. However we have found that couples are still choosing relaxed wording even though they are picking formal style designs which is a nice contrast. Couples who are parents are including their children in their invitation wording which is a lovely touch also. Colours of soft creams, golds, bronze, soft pinks, mint and other pastels are so popular at the moment. Fonts have moved slightly away from whimsical and back to a more scripty calligraphy style. Modern Rustic is very much in and going nowhere anytime soon. ‘Rustic’ in style – so this is in the use of softly aged/off-colours, teamed with kraft envelopes. Then, ‘modern’ in content – couples are mostly choosing to invite their guests from themselves now. Only on occasion over the last year, have I been asked to include their parent’s names on the invitation introduction! BUT each to their own! Mixed mediums are also still a key trend. The addition of threads, craft twine, even glass, wool or material elements to add personality and individuality.
I blogged on forecast colours last Autumn and I’m delighted to see my prediction of green rang through, as Pantone’s Colour of the year for 2017 is a beautiful zesty yellow green called, Greenery (PANTONE 15-0343). Greens graced the catwalks last Autumn, which in turn has a ripple effect into all other industries where colour is a factor! Blues, and autumnal colours seem to be rating very high also and ‘Plum’ tones will also be a hit in 2017!
Motifs in beautiful spring/summer florals or autumn/winter foliage are a huge trend for the coming year. If you’re looking for wedding stationery inspiration for 2017, you’ll certainly be on-trend with this combination! Soft pastels for S/S and deeper tones for A/W, teamed with contrasting illustrations, are top trends for 2017!
