10 Gorgeous Wedding Cake Trends for 2017

Cakes

Right, we know traditionally January is the month of diets and all things green and clear (no, that doesn’t include gin) but today we’re indulging ourselves in a little dessert, all in the name of research! Wedding cakes come in a myriad of styles, shapes, sizes and flavours, and indeed some don’t necessarily take the form of cakes at all… Dessert tables are a massive trend again this year, with many couples going the DIY route and inviting guests to offer up their wares too. Donuts have popped up EVERYWHERE over the last few months, and many couples are looking at them as an alternative to the wedding cake too. Flavours are getting more experiments, with beautiful light coconut and lime, or decadent Espresso and chocolate making up just some of the unique tastes on offer for 2017. Check out some of our other fave wedding cake trends for 2017 below!

Confetti Cakes

Confetti or funfetti is a super cute way to give your cake feel a little party vibe and maybe create a bit of nostalgia among guests (we immediately think 99 with sprinkles when we see these!). This is perfect for a simple one tier naked cake -pop it on as the focal point of your dessert table and taadaa!

Gold One-Tier Cakes

Getting a bit more decadent the metallic gold wedding cake remains a huge trend for 2017 and we’re absolutely loving the look of it in single tier form. This cake all depends on your colour palette, so make sure it’s inkeeping with a metallic theme to really help it fit in. The only trouble for us is it’ll feel like an absolute crime to cut it up!

Cheese Wheel Cakes

Now this is our type of cake. Cheese wheel stacks are becoming a huge trend for Irish weddings and of course they should be – don’t we have enough dairy to go around a party all year long?! These look great at a rustic style soiree, and make for fabulous desserts. And you can dish some out as favours for guests to bring home after!

Donut Stacks

As we mentioned in our intro, it seems you can’t swing a cat for hitting a donut cafe in the city at the moment, so it was inevitable that this become a trend in weddings for 2017. There are so many ways to serve these and in a bunch of different flavours, guests will be on cloud nine. Expect most Instagrams of your wedding to include one.

Calligraphy Cake Toppers

Without a doubt the cake topper of the moment, the calligraphy word topper is pretty, chic and can be super personal if you put the thought into it. We couldn’t love these anymore and they’re easy to get ahold of on sites like Not on the High Street or Etsy.

Lightbulb Cake Toppers/Unique Cake Toppers

Following calligraphy toppers, ultra unique toppers are also gaining pace for 2017 as couples get mad creative with what goes on the top tier. A niche trend last year was the ‘industrial wedding‘, where lightbulbs were in abundance, even on cakes. Other items like Lego figurines, Polaroids and mini bunting are just some of the things we’ve come across recently – we can’t wait to see what this year brings!

DIY Dessert Tables

Dessert tables are a fantastic catch all for guests, and if your venue is on board with it, they can even be curated by your friends and family (hello savings amiright?!) Cookies, muffins, truffles, cakes, Rice Krispie squares… the list goes on. This is also a brilliant way to cater for guests who might be dairy or gluten free – they can get in on the action with a few ‘specialised’ options.
