10 Questions to Ask Each Other Before the Big Day

Planning & Advice

You’ve said yes, you’re deep in venue research, and your Pinterest board is out of control. But before you get swept up in seating plans and centrepieces, there’s one thing worth putting at the top of your to-do list: a proper, honest conversation with your partner.

Not the most glamorous part of wedding planning, we know. But asking each other the right questions early on can save a lot of stress, and the odd argument, further down the line. Think of it as laying the groundwork before the big day.

Here are ten questions to ask before getting married that every couple should work through together.

1. What does our ideal wedding actually look like?

Big and buzzing or small and intimate? Relaxed garden party or formal sit-down dinner? Get this conversation out of the way early. You might be surprised where you agree and where you don’t.

2. What’s our budget, really?

Not the “wouldn’t it be nice” budget. The actual number. Talk about who’s contributing, how much, and what you’re both comfortable spending before you start booking anything.

3. Who’s making the decisions?

Are you both equally involved? Is one of you the lead planner? Knowing this upfront avoids a lot of back-and-forth.

4. Which parts of the day matter most to us?

For some couples, the food and music are everything. For others, it’s all about the photography. Agree on your priorities so you know where to put the money and the energy.

Top tip: Write your top three priorities down separately, then compare. It’s a handy way to spot where you’re aligned and where compromise might be needed.

5. How many guests are we inviting?

Guest list conversations can get surprisingly heated. Start with a rough number and talk about any non-negotiables before the list grows legs of its own.

6. Are there any family dynamics we need to plan around?

Divorced parents, complicated relationships, guests who definitely cannot be seated near each other. Get ahead of it now rather than on the day.

7. What are our expectations around the hen and stag?

Some couples are happy for their wedding party to go all out. Others prefer something low-key. A quick chat here means no nasty surprises.

8. How are we handling the planning itself?

Weekends only? One planning session a week? Setting some boundaries around when and how you tackle the to-do list keeps things from taking over your whole relationship.

Top tip: Use a shared planning tool – like the free weddingsonline wedding planning app – to keep everything in one place. Less back-and-forth over WhatsApp, more craic.

9. What does the honeymoon look like?

Beach lounger or backpack? Big trip straight away or a mini-moon now and something bigger later? It’s worth getting on the same page before you start browsing.

10. How are we going to look after each other on the day?

This one’s underrated. Talk about how you’ll check in with each other during the day, especially if one of you is more likely to get overwhelmed. A plan makes it easier to actually enjoy it.

Wedding planning can put even the most solid couples under pressure, so taking the time to ask each other the right questions before getting married is honestly one of the best things you can do. You don’t need to have every answer figured out, but the conversation itself goes a long way.
