Most brides will have a a good idea about different elements of their wedding; how the day will feel, the colours they want to include, who will be on their bridal party etc. Many however are unclear about their wedding flowers, simply because they have never had to chose flowers for such an important occasion before!

1. Create a moodboard
Before you meet with your florist to discuss your day it’s a good idea to create a moodboard of images that you are drawn to. They don’t all have to feature flowers it could be a colour that you love, a fabric swatch or images of your ceremony space. Your bespoke moodboard will slowly reveal your vision and help your florist understand what you love.
2. Don’t fixate on flowers
If you choose the right florist you shouldn’t be worried about the variety of flowers in your arrangements. It’s easy to see a flower you love and decide you want it, but sometimes this is not as easy as you might think. Your florist will guide you towards what will work in your arrangements without you becoming obsessed!
3. Be guided by the season
Working with the seasons and being inspired by what is in season will not only reflect in your budget (in a good way) but will be a more sustainable choice. Spring brings peonies and tulips, whilst summer is for garden roses and cosmos, zinnias and amaranthus in autumn and anemones and thistle in winter. Be guided by your florist, they know the best time of year for all flowers.
4. Invest in standout floral pieces
If you are mindful of your budget consider a small number of standout pieces such as filled urns or a floral arch instead of lots of small arrangements spread across your ceremony and reception. This will give more drama and impact.
5. Know your budget (at least roughly!)
Understanding how much flowers cost is tricky, especially as most brides will have no previous experience. It is important to know how much you have to work with. You will soon discover through your florist if what you are looking and your budget align or if compromises need to be made.

7. Repurpose arrangements where you can
Make the most of your flowers by using them in the reception as well as the ceremony. Many florists will offer a turnaround service ensuring you get the best of them for the entire day.
8. Add interest with unexpected items
Adding interesting elements such as fruit, vegetables, branches and dried florals will bring your styling up a notch. Think grapes, orange slices and pomegranate.
9. Consider symbolism and floral meanings
If you want your bouquet to be very significant and personal to you have a look at flowers and their meanings. Chat to your florist about including flower that hold a significance to you, such as a flower your mum had in her bouquet.
10. Don’t forget scent and potential allergies
Some flowers are very heavily scented, lilies and gardenias for example. Within an enclosed space these may become a problem for your bridal party of guests, if they have any allergies or are sensitive to scent. Keep this in mind and ask your florist to create low fragrance arrangements.
