Ask the Experts – Cakes – What are the more unusual Wedding Cake Flavours I can go for?

Planning & Advice

When I think of a wedding cake, I think of my mom’s Christmas fruit cake which I’ve never liked the taste of (but never told her that, of course!) What flavours can you get wedding cakes in nowadays? I’ve been to lots of weddings that had chocolate biscuit cake, what are the other popular options?! – Susan

Choosing as many different flavours as you can means that you have more variety to offer your guests. Chocolate biscuit cake is still a big crowd pleaser, but you can make it more interesting by adding marshmallows or different chocolate bars. It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for traditionalists fruit cake still remains popular. Different flavoured sponges are guaranteed to be a hit but if you want to break with tradition, think about mixing it up with your flavour choices – chocolate sponge with raspberry icing is a great combination.

Eden Cake Company’s most popular flavours are from our Sponge Style Range – Chocolate Fudge and our Vanilla and Raspberry.   The trend is moving away from the traditional fruit cake.   The Chocolate Biscuit Cake is very popular, and this style cake has a longer shelf life (around 5 weeks if kept refrigerated).  We offer our couples not only the standard chocolate biscuit cake, but a Dark Chocolate Citrus Cake, and,for those wishing to keep their aunts and moms happy, the Chocolate Biscuit Royale – with rum soaked mixed fruit, nuts, glace cherries – all the delight of a traditional fruit cake.

Susan, I think cake can be split into three types: the traditional Fruit Cake, Chocolate Biscuit Cake and Sponge.  What will make your cake stand out from the rest will be the combination of flavours you incorporate into any of these.  For instance, Sponge can be a Carrot Cake with a Lemon filling, or White Chocolate with Raspberries.  The Chocolate Biscuit Cake can be made with a Coffee Liquor or even Maltesers. The variety of combinations is great in every way, so why not choose a different one for each tier. Enjoy!
