How To Prepare For Your Engagement Shoot

Planning & Advice
engagement photos

Congratulations on your engagement! If you’ve chosen your wedding photographer there’s a good change they will offer an engagement shoot – but how to prepare and what to expect? Today we’re sharing lots of tips and advice…

Your engagement shoot is a great time for you to get to know your photographer and will also help you get a feel of being in front of the camera. The result will be beautiful images for you together at a really precious time and are a great resource to use for Save the Dates and wedding invitations.

Location is key

The location you choose will help determine the mood of your photos. Choose a secluded beach at sundown and you’ll have blissful, romantic images. Choose a Saturday afternoon in the middle of the city and you’ll have vibrant, busy images. Think about the feeling you’d like to get from your images and choose your location around that.

Time of day matters

You might feel your best in the morning, or it could be just as the sun goes down. Chat to your photographer about how light impacts your images and the location you’ve chosen. During the summer months, golden hour on the beach is hard to beat!

Choose your clothes wisely

Simple is always best, clothing with too much pattern will take away from your photos and distract. Earthy toned clothes will always work well with an outdoor shoot. Keep your outfits in sync with the same underlying colour palette for an easy look.

Think about props

Make your shoot extra fun by bringing some props. They could be anything that means something to you as a couple, your pet dog for example, or simply an umbrella to shelter under! Smoke bombs are having a moment and add instant colour and life to images, whilst a cosy blanket wrapped around you both will add romance.

The main aim of your engagement shoot is to have fun, and if that means forgetting all the rules, so be it! Go with what makes you comfortable and enjoy!
