A Laid-Back Spanish Wedding Bursting with Colour

“As we were getting married in the summer in the south of Spain which is such a colourful location, we wanted to reflect this in our wedding.”

The couple: Sophie Lawrenson & Terence Slade
Length of engagement: 3 years | Wedding date: 29th July 2017
Wedding location: Cortijo Maria Luisa, Nerja, Spain
Wedding planner: Nerja Weddings

We met… on a night out 9 years ago in a local bar.

Our proposal… There wasn’t one! We had been living together for 4 years (together for 6 years) when we mutually decided that it was the right time to get married and start planning our wedding.

My look… Was an oyster colour dress from Monsoon with lots of pearls at the top with a long, flowing simple skirt. I didn’t want a big wedding dress so this dress was perfect for me. My hair and makeup was just perfect for me. It was simple but pretty which is exactly what I wanted. I don’t wear a lot of makeup so I didn’t want my makeup to be heavy. Due to the heat of the Spanish sun, I wore my hair up.

Our ceremony… was perfect for us. It was a short ceremony, we didn’t want a long ceremony as everyone was sat in the sun! As we are both Atheists, we didn’t want any religious readings or hymns during the ceremony. Instead our mothers read a reading each. My mother read a poem written by my late grandad and Terry’s mother read the lyrics to John Lennon’s Imagine.

His suit… was a dark blue suit with a yellow tie which complemented my dress perfectly.

We chose our photographer because… my brother is a great photographer and we wanted a casual wedding where we didn’t go off and leave our guests for a long time taking photos. We wanted to spend as much time as possible with our guests and my brother took a lot of lovely, natural photos which is exactly what we wanted.

Our menu… was tapas and paella. The food was absolutely delicious. There was so much choice of tapas and the paella was cooked fresh at the venue. The buffet style catering really suited our casual, Spanish wedding.

We chose our venue because… it was so beautiful. As soon as I visited the venue I knew straight away that it was the venue for us. We also wanted a venue where we could get married and hold the reception so it was perfect.

We chose our wedding coordinator… because we knew that we needed help to plan our wedding as it was abroad. I found Belen’s details (Nerja Weddings) on the internet and as soon as we met up I knew Belen would provide a great service which she did. Our decoration and flowers were beautiful and were all organised by Belen. I really like the fact that Belen was local to Nerja and knew the area well.

Our wedding theme/colours… Our colour theme was multicolours! As we were getting married in the summer in the south of Spain which is such a colourful location, we wanted to reflect this in our wedding and we just wanted our wedding to be a burst of all different colours. I suppose you can say that our theme was ‘Spain’. We ate Tapas and Paella and we have a Flamenco show as part of our entertainment.

My favourite part of the wedding day was… spending time with all our family and friends. We had a small wedding which meant we were able to spend quality time with all of our guests.

My piece of advice for other couples… would be not to stress and make sure you enjoy your day as it goes so quickly!
