McQueen 2011 Bridal at Paris Fashion Week

Fashion & Jewellery

With the commotion surrounding the Royal Wedding, all eyes were on Alexander McQueen 2011 Bridal offering at Paris Fashion Week. Sarah Burton has taken the reigns of the avant-garde label after Lee McQueen’s premature passing. She is evidently sharing a smile and a nod with the gifted designer by continuing the Mad Hatter type looks that united him with fame monster Lady Gaga. The hard theme was fiercely apparent in every costume that steamed down the runway, but was balanced with a soft, fuzzy edge in fur and billowing organza. Perhaps an indication into the style Kate Middleton may be going for?

McQueen 2011 Bridal Styling

The fact that the models have minimal styling is no accident in this collection. Hair slicked back, not a smudge of red lipstick in sight, and hardly any jewellery… definitely not a traditional look. This is for brides who want to let the dress do the talking (and the walking, and the posing…). And, the guests won’t stop talking about the dress for years, guaranteed. The last dress of the selection is our favourite. Faintly Vera Wang in styling (are we allowed to say that?), the sharp edges of the skirt work so beautifully with the fabric.

Clearly McQueen 2011 Bridal looks aren’t for every bride (or, correct me if I’m wrong, any bride?). But, we are certain to see these ‘heritage’ silhouettes, contrasting textures and fabrics, and hardline details making their way to universal bridal wear. And in terms of those contemporary stylish Royals, all I can say is ‘watch this space’. You probably won’t catch any aristocracy wearing this, but any celebrity will do. And (you might agree), some of these dresses would do very well in another setting, not necessarily bridal. The first dress, for instance, wouldn’t go amiss at some kind of Hollywood garden party where Kate Moss is also invited.
