Meet Marsala – 2015’s Wedding Colour of the Year

Décor & Flowers

Well not ‘wedding’ colour of the year specifically, but Pantone’s forecasted overall ‘Colour of the Year’… Marsala, which Pantone describes as “naturally robust and earthy wine red”, was announced just last week as the shade we’ll all be wearing, sitting on, decorating with and eating over the next 12 months. This announcement wasn’t received with open arms by everyone however, with one design blogger comparing the shade to “wine stained teeth” and the “colour of your 85-year-old aunt’s favourite pant suit” amongst other things. Of course Pantone’s Colour of the Year has to be taken with a pinch of salt – and when treated as merely a guideline for the type of hues we might be seeing a lot of in 2015, it can be completely embraced and maybe even celebrated (too far?)

Honestly speaking, we like Marsala, in fact we’re so on board with it that we’ve actually been wearing a similar shade on our lips and nails for the last 6 months (and before you say anything, yes, the boys too). Yes, it feels a little flat on the page, but when you take into account the array of luxurious textures, flowers and fabrics that will look delectable in this deep hue it’s easy to see why the people at Pantone love it so much.

7 Top Colour Palettes for a 2015 Wedding

Marsala and Forest Green

A reddy brown palette is autumn wedding perfection when paired with a deep forest green and a soft shade of custard. Deep berries, plums, burgundy and of course the shade du jour Marsala, create a bold but romantic palette that takes its cue from nature and offers a burst of rich flavours against a beautiful white wedding dress. When it comes to bridal beauty, we love a bold berry lip – try a shade like Rebel or Lush Life by MAC or Yves Saint Laurent’s Forbidden – and of course some vampish wedding nails never go amiss – we love Chanel’s classic shade Rouge Noir.

Of course grooms can get in on the action too with their wedding wear – try a rich berry velvet blazer instead of a traditional black blazer, or a deep red scarf over a gorgeous tweed suit. When it comes to flowers this palette is ideal – purple Calla Lillies, pales roses and berry accents create a bouquet with depth and colour that looks incredible in outdoor wedding photos.

Marsala and Classic Blue

For a more wintry palette, try adding two of Pantone’s other top colours for 2015 – Glacier Grey and Classic Blue – into the mix. The above selection demonstrates how to incorporate these shades without over doing it. We love the addition of Silver Brunia and ‘Dusty Miller‘ to a bouquet which brings instant glamour and sparkle to a bunch of pretty blooms.
