We met… the summer after I finished school. We were both working in a part-time job in the local cinema. We instantly clicked. We found we had so much in common especially our love for music and travelling. In fact that summer, soon after we met, Emmet had planned an inter-railing trip around Europe with friends but cut the trip short to come home early. Since then we have travelled to so many places together.

Our proposal… Emmet proposed around Christmas time. He had it all arranged with the help of my sister. I hadn’t a clue. It was my day off so we spent the day shopping in town followed by dinner and a gig. When we got home that night, Emmet jumped out of the taxi and ran into the house. I had no idea what had got into him, he set the alarm off in the house but ignored it and ran into the sitting room. I followed him shouting “What’s going on?!” He was there in front of me on one knee and a beautiful ring in hand. He had stuck loads of pictures of us from the past eight years on the walls, our song was playing in the background. It was very romantic; it took me completely by surprise.

My hair and makeup… My make-up and hair was a combined effort made by myself and my family on the morning. I avoided a fussy upstyle and opted for a simple classic style to match the vintage look I wanted.

My dress… was vintage inspired from Dirty Fabulous on Wicklow Street, Dublin. I did try traditional full length gowns with trains and bling but I realised very quickly that that wasn’t for me. I loved my dress which was tea length with a sweetheart bodice and a separate lace bolero. I played around with the dress by adding a bow ribbon to the waistline. For the ceremony, I paired the dress with white satin shoes and a veil. In the evening, I swapped the white shoes for a red velvet pair with heart shaped jewels and took off the veil and bolero for an even more comfortable party look on the dance floor.

Our ceremony… We decided on a humanist ceremony. Susie Kennedy was our celebrant, she was amazing. The ceremony was really special.

We chose our venue because… When we went to have a look at Mount Druid we immediately fell in love with the place. It was exactly what we wanted. The tin chapel, the boathouse and the barn were so colourful and nothing like anything we had seen at any other venue. It offered that laid back and fun atmosphere we were after. The venue is perfect if you are looking to put your own stamp on it. We made lots of our own decorations.

We chose our photographer because… we were lucky enough to be chosen by David (David Maury Photography). We entered a competition through weddingsonline to book David’s platinum package for only €500. We couldn’t believe it. We had never won anything before and we were chuffed to have David capture our day.

What our bridal party wore… Our bridesmaids’ dresses and capelets came from ASOS. I was nervous about ordering the dresses online but I was thrilled with how they turned out. I thought the bridesmaids looked stunning.

His suit… was from Protocol for Men on Dawson Street. Emmet wore a red tie while the groomsmen wore navy ties.

Our honeymoon… we went on that trip around Europe that Emmet cut short when we first met. Together this time we flew to Berlin, then Venice, Dubrovnik and Budapest, ending the honeymoon camping at Sziget Festival.

Our wedding theme/colours… We wanted the day to reflect who were are as a couple and the things that brought us together. We both love music so we incorporated that into the theme. For the seating plan we chose our favourite bands and artists and used old records to make decorations. It was really important to us that people felt comfortable and enjoyed themselves so we tried to create a laid back, fun and colourful atmosphere. I also took inspiration from images of 60s retro weddings when it came to picking my dress and booking the amazing Morris Minor which brought me to the chapel.

My favourite part of the wedding day… Roseanne: Walking up the aisle to Emmet, it was a very emotional moment. Emmet: Waiting for Roseanne at the chapel as she walked up the aisle. The music was playing; I was about to marry the love of my life and my groomsmen and parents were there behind me supporting me.

My piece of advice for other brides… Make the day about the both of you. We found it was extra special because both Emmet and I planned everything together. Include each other and listen to each other’s ideas. There were some things that Emmet suggested and I wasn’t sure at first, but now I would really have regretted not doing them. Brides can sometimes get caught up in how they imagined the day would be and forget that it’s equally important for the groom.
