About Aoife, Ophelia Bridal, Drogheda:

I opened Ophelia Bridal in 2007  but even before this I was making wedding dresses for clients from my studio at home. I studied fashion design in The Grafton Academy in Dublin and specialised in Evening and Bridal Wear. I really started sewing from a very early age as I was surrounded by it at home. My mum studied Dressmaking in college so you could say it’s in the blood! For me, to progress from making gowns from scratch to altering them was a natural progression. Having the eye for fit and understand the construction of a dress is so important when it come alternating a wedding gown.

How long before the wedding day should a bride have her wedding dress altered?

I prefer to start alterations about 3 months before the wedding date. You would be surprised how quickly this time can disappear, and even to arrange appointments as brides tend to be so busy coming up to the wedding.

How many fittings should a bride expect?

Generally I find 2 – 3 fittings are required and I always recommend trying on your gown when collecting it just in case there any last minute changes. This would generally be about a week before the wedding.

Should the bride bring any accessories to her fittings?

It`s so important to have your shoes for the fitting, the 1st fitting if possible but most definitely the 2nd. Underwear is also key. I work with a brand of bridal underwear call Poirier. Your underwear can make the difference between the best possible fit or not!

How much can a bride expect to pay for her alterations?

Don`t underestimate the cost of alterations. They can range quite a bit depending on the work involved. Anything with beading or lace can be expensive but also some of the most simple gowns can can have up to four or five layers, requiring each one to be altered individually. Prices can range from around €200 to anywhere around €400 or €500 upwards. Getting the fit of your chosen gown right is just as important as find right gown in the first place.

Thanks to Aoife for sharing her knowledge, hopefully it will help you in your quest for the best fitting wedding dress!
