You know we love to see when a bride and groom have added touches of their personality to their day, but I don’t think we’ve ever featured a groom who not only made from scratch their bespoke candy cart and every wooden sign used but also turned his hand to icing and decorating the cake – yes, he really did it all. And of course, we can’t forget David’s lovely bride, Rachel who was very hands on with her wedding ideas. Rachel and David’s day was held at Brooklodge Hotel, Macreddin, Co. Wicklow and was captured by Katie Kav Photography. Grab a cuppa, sit back and take in all the details, you are in for a treat!
After meeting at the Blue Grass Festival as teenagers. Almost ten years later David proposed during a surprise trip to Paris.
“Because of the recession David went to London to work as a carpenter. We flew back and forth as much as possible and during one of my longer trips over to see him he woke me suddenly at 2am telling me to pack our bags as we were off on a break at 4am! I had no idea what was going on and was very confused. Eventually David told me that we were going to Paris for the weekend. He also asked me not to get excited and to think it was anything more than a weekend away, insuring me he had not saved enough yet to afford a ring of any kind…so with that, the idea of David proposing anytime soon was gone from my mind. In Paris we spent our time trying to squeeze in all the popular tourist attractions, even getting to put our initialed padlock and locking it to the love bridge. We walked around everywhere. On Sunday (which I thought was our last day) David suggested spending the day in a park and having a picnic. We spent the day in the park, going on a rowboat, having a picnic and bottle of wine with gorgeous weather. David then asked if we would go back to our hotel to get ready for dinner.
I was in the bathroom fixing my makeup and when I came out David asked me to sit down with him. He asked me to marry him and pulled out a little box. He opened the box and to my amazement inside the box was a “Care Bear” ring. (I’ve loved the Care Bears since I was a child). I started crying as David explained that we would pick out my engagement ring together. We rang our family and friends to tell them our exciting news straight away. David and I then went for dinner near by the Eiffel Tower, where David explained we weren’t returning to London in the morning (as I had been fooled to think) but we were getting a train to Antwerp to go ring shopping, staying there until Wednesday and David would return with me to Waterford and spend the weekend celebrating with our family and friends!! He had it all planned and figured out! We spent the night we got engaged laying on a picnic blanket sipping on wine behind the Eiffel Tower watching the light show. It was like something out of a movie!!”
Rachel had spent plenty of years before she was even engaged dreaming of her perfect day, so when she got to planning she was certainly on a mission! With lists for list and a clear vision of a monochrome theme with hints of red, the day was spectacular. The couple had a Humanist ceremony in the old chapel on the grounds Brooklodge Hotel followed by their reception in the same venue. Rachel and David had put a lot of effort and time in to creating a bespoke day, special touches created by them included tossing cones filled with dried, lavender scented rose petals, brooch bouquets, a candy cart that David turned his hand to and a large wooden ‘H’ initial for guests to sign as a guest book.
That ceremony programme looks familiar! Download our alternative 2 page wedding ceremony programme.
Highlight of the day
“We both agree that the highlight of our wedding day was getting to see each other for the first time.
I had to make sure not to cry when I saw David waiting for me in the church! My one request to our photographer, Katie, was to make sure she got a shot of David when he first saw me, she did and it’s one of my favourite pictures from our wedding day. Also, David loved the speeches. They were so heartfelt and hilarious!! Even our beloved dog named Brian made it into the speeches. David had requested that the speeches were given before the dinner so anyone giving one could relax and enjoy their dinner.”
Advice for other couples
“Organization is the key, especially if you have a lot of DIY items that you are going to be setting up yourselves. I made lists about lists! And it helped hugely! I would tell everyone to do as much as you can yourselves. I took so much pride in seeing everyone admire all our hard work!”
