Evan and Deirdre met at Waterford Institute of Technology and after chasing him for a date and sharing their first kiss the rest is history! After secretly having her engagement ring designed and made in Dubai, Evan took his time in popping the question to Deirdre, and finally got down on one knee during the June Bank Holiday in 2015.
The couple knew instantly they wanted to have a New Year’s Eve wedding after previously chatting about it the year before. “Not only are you starting a new year as husband and wife, but also everyone loves a good party on New Year’s Eve and it would be easier for our friends that are abroad to get there over Christmas, so a New Year wedding was decided,” explained Deirdre.
“We looked at different location options in Waterford and landed on Athenaeum almost by accident, but as soon as we walked in and met the team, we knew it was right for us. We had a short list of what we wanted – great food, big fires, great lighting and candles everywhere. The Athenaeum hit all of those notes for us and we booked straight away,” she added.
Deirdre and Evan chose a unique theme for their day, but one that worked very well given the day they had chosen. “We went with a time theme to celebrate the New Year. All of our tables were named after a city and on each table there was a vintage alarm clock set to the time in that city. From 7.30 that evening, we had all of our tables, one by one, ring in the New Year!” she explained.
With a black tie style chosen Deirdre dressed her maids in beautiful navy gowns, whilst she wore a simple bateau neck gown with full length veil. Evan and his grooms party looked the handsome party in their black tuxedos.
“We absolutely loved the day and talked about it at length on our honeymoon – there is not one thing we would change. Our best memory of the day was when the singing chef was playing after dinner and everyone was up singing together with napkins flying around the place – a truly special moment for us both to look around and see everyone we love in one room with huge smiles on their faces,” concluded Deirdre.
