It was love at first sight for Verity and Matthew who began dating two weeks after initially meeting.

Their wedding planning began at the moment Matthew proposed in their home one Saturday afternoon whilst surrounded by flowers he had created into an aisle! “Matthew proposed with a beautiful ring designed by him with his jeweller friend Douglas Ely – unique, deco, blue diamond and white gold. This was the beginning of our DIY, home wedding,” said Verity.

“Matthew and I could not fathom spending so much on a wedding. We wanted it to be a special day, still with an aisle, great photos, but mainly we wanted a party. We cared mostly about the food, drinks and dance floor. When looking at venues, we then had to consider accommodation, transport and time in the day. Matthew decided the backyard was a great idea and together we began renovating the house and yard to accommodate the event,” said Verity.

Their wedding at home was a great excuse to landscape the garden and together their family and friends all helped with building a back deck, a dance floor and raised garden beds. Due to the DIY style, a vintage, country style was chosen, to create a relaxed feel. They had mix-match white chairs with wooden trestle tables for dinner and wine barrels with umbrellas and hay bails as a tiered bar.

“With baby breath flowers, we also used copper baskets to hang greenery from our trees under our marquee and to add to the wedding arch which my father made. It was all very family orientated and was mirrored by all children present at the wedding and cartwheeling the night away under the stars!” added Verity.

Wedding Planning Advice

It is the most special day, but is everything you think you need necessary? I would say keep it simple, that way it is intimate about you and your marriage, not a huge expense that will be over once the venue kicks you out!

We had our photos taken before the wedding so that we could move straight from ceremony to reception without leaving, which worked a treat. We didn’t miss anything and had longer to see those people that had travelled long distances to see us.
