Good morning, our lovely couple today are Sky and Daniel. After literally running in to each other on O’Connell Street, their relationship took an international turn and we are delighted to share their traditional Chinese wedding with you, all the way from Jilin in China. Thanks to Aoife from Ruby-Sky Photography for sharing their vibrant day with us!

“Sky and I first met on O’Connell St in Dublin, it was a chance meeting. I happened to be with a mutual friend of ours at the time who introduced us as we crossed paths. I often think of how much random chance was involved in us meeting, but I’m so glad things worked out the way they did!” said Daniel.

“Fairly early on in our relationship we knew we had something good. It didn’t take long for us to move in with each other and I think the realisation that we would eventually get married just crept up on the both of us, which lead to the proposal in 2012. It was in Hong Kong, but wasn’t very romantic. We had travelled to the city with the intention on buying a ring. The trip was very memorable, Hong Kong is a fantastic city,” he added.

Of course we all know weddings are huge events the world over but in China things go up a notch! Due to the amount of people marrying, some venues will hold three receptions in a day, which leads to complicated planning, which is why many couples hire a planner.

“Once we told our wedding planner that we wanted a traditional Chinese style wedding he was able to take care of almost everything. The traditional Chinese wedding ceremony is pretty ancient so we were following well-established procedures and using traditional decorations. However, the planner was pretty pleased to have the opportunity to arrange a traditional style wedding as almost all weddings in China these days are much more modern, western style influenced events,” explained Sky.

With red being the traditional colour of Chinese weddings both Sky and Daniel wore outfits handmade by traditional Chinese tailors.

“We chose the traditional theme to make the wedding more interesting for guests who had travelled from Ireland, but it turned out many of our local guests really enjoyed it as most couples don’t go for the traditional Chinese theme anymore. We were a bit of a novelty even for them, too!” added Sky.

“Our day went fantastically! Everything was so well planned. But the atmosphere was so relaxed and fun that if anything had gone wrong it wouldn’t have seemed like a big deal. We couldn’t possibly choose a highlight, the whole day was so enjoyable,” said Sky.
