4 Incredible Music Themed Weddings

Décor & Flowers

Music themed weddings have been around for as long as popular music… at least! If you and  your other half love music of any kind, it may just be your perfect answer. Festival, classical, 60s, jazz… it all makes for a perfect party. Take a look at some of the ideas we absolutely love below.

Festival music themed weddings

Of course, this had to be first on the list! According to the Music Festivals Ireland website, in 2016 there are more than 300 festivals of every kind taking place across the country from January to December. Most have exactly the kind of vibe you may be looking for – casual yet very feminine fashions, flowing hair, field flowers, and a generally relaxed atmosphere. And, of course, wellies – an essential no festival party should be without. You’ll find loads of ideas right here on weddingsonline on how to give your wedding a festival feel, and summer wedding trends to steal.

Five essentials for a festival wedding:

  • invitations and stationery that look like festival tickets or posters
  • marquee
  • bunting and decor with lots of colour
  • DJ who really digs the festival vibe
  • wellies – if not for the mud, then for photos

Classical music themed weddings

Elegant music-related touches is all you need to create this theme. To keep things simple, pick a pastel hue or two and accent with black and white. Naming tables couldn’t be easier – go for composers’ names (Mozart, Bach, Ravel, Vivaldi), or your favourite famous works of music (Moonlight Sonata, Fur Elise, Canon in D, Walts of the Flowers from the Nutcracker). And a harpist, violinist or a string quartet will enhance the ceremony or reception beautifully.

Five essentials for a classical music wedding:

  • sheet music paper for confetti cones, candle-holder wrapping, paper flowers and other paper crafts – plenty of free printables online
  • classical music as ceremony/cocktail hour/dinner accompaniment
  • cake decorated with musical notes
  • candlelight
  • simple but strong flower decor – like roses or lilies

50s, 60s, 80s music themed weddings

You notice we didn’t mention the 70s – this is because it’s not a far step from a festival wedding to a 70s one. Other musical decades with a strong identity are also perfect as a wedding theme. For the 1950s, Elvis and big band stylings come to mind immediately, as does Connie Francis, Frankie Laine, and Jerry Lee Lewis (Great Balls of Fire is a fantastic dancefloor shaker!). The 60s – no surprise there, it’s The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Frank Sinatra (Strangers in the Night, what a tune!). And the 80s – there’s no question pop ruled the radio waves, but so did hair metal. This is the decade of Michael Jackson, Madonna, Queen, Phil Collins, Tina Turner – and that 80s night favourite, Nena, with 99 Red Balloons. The hits of these decades guarantee a packed dance floor all night long.

Five essentials for decade-specific music wedding:

  • a killer setlist – find a DJ who’s a fan of your particular decade
  • vinyl record props and decor
  • decade-favoured fashions for the wedding party – or even dress code for the guests?
  • stationery to look like your favourite album covers
  • a talking point prop – vintage typewriter for the 50s, ‘All You Need Is Love’ sign for the 60s, Rubik’s cube for the 80s?

Jazz music themed weddings

Jazz music themed weddings are a truly unique idea, and perfect if you love this music genre. It makes an excellent combination with a vintage look, as many people automatically associate jazz with the 1930s – and that’s always a cracking wedding theme. Black, white and gold is a great colour combination, and use old vinyl records as a unique guestbook. Of course, you won’t have any problems picking the soundtrack for your party – your favourite jazz tunes are all you need. You’ll also find loads of jazz player and instrument silhouettes online, for easy and elegant printables.

Five essentials for a jazz themed music wedding:

  • the perfect jazz soundtrack during dinner
  • brass instruments and piano-related decor
  • vintage jazz posters or record covers
  • music compilation CD favours with your favourite tunes
  • a live jazz band
