There are much harder decisions to make when you’re wedding planning, but choosing your cake is one of the extra exciting ones! Cake tasting afternoon, anyone?!

Today we’ve got seven tips to help you make those choices to ensure everyone is talking about your sweet treat!

1. Understand size v’s number of guests

You want to give everyone at least one slice, right? And maybe have enough to enjoy after the day. When you choose your cake maker they’ll be needing to know how many guests you are having so there’s enough to go around. Tiers are generally measured in inches of diameter. For example, a three tier cake with six, eight and ten diameter cakes will serve around 120 portions from a round cake, and 200 from a square cake. If you want to create a six tier masterpiece but don’t need all the cake dummy tiers can be added to create the look you’re going for.

2. Choose your flavours

There’s so much more than just fruit or chocolate, deciding on your flavours is the really fun part! Most cake makers will offer either a tasting afternoon, where you will visit their studio and try their different flavours. The option of cake through the post has also became popular, and can be enjoyed in the comfort of your own home. Get looking at the flavour menu and taste, taste, taste! Don’t forget you might want to include a gluten free option to ensure all guests can sample.

3. Create your cake to match your venue

Although you mightn’t think this matters, try to choose a cake that will work in the setting it will be displayed. Many venues offer much more than just a table – cakes on a swing, anyone?!

4. Decorate in style

Have you chosen a naked cake, semi-naked or iced? Have a look through our recent features to be inspired with cake decor, and don’t forget to ask your florist to provide flowers if you want to continue the floral look right through your day.

5. Choose your shape

Must wedding cakes are round but that doesn’t mean yours must be. Square cakes have made somewhat of a comeback and look elegant and chic.

6. Ask all the questions

If you’ve chosen the right cake maker for you (and we know you’ll find them right here!) don’t be afraid to ask them all the questions you have – they are the professional after all.

7. Cut the cake!

Sounds silly really, doesn’t it – but some couples really do forget to cut the cake! We’ve noticed many couples have moved the iconic cake cutting photo moment to during the welcome reception which is a clever way to fill a little time before the main event and ensures everyone gets to enjoy a slice with a cuppa.
