Keep your ring clean

The best way to care for your engagement ring is to keep it clean. Elizabeth Taylor famously cleaned her 33.19-carat diamond ring with hot water, a toothbrush and gin. We would advise you have your ring cleaned and maintained once a year to ensure your insurance is valid and everything is in check. If you’re going to clean your ring at home, experts recommend that you soak your ring in warm water with dishwashing liquid for 20 to 40 minutes. Then gently clean around the diamond and ring with a soft-bristled toothbrush (a kids toothbrush will do, just make sure you don’t use it for anything other than cleaning jewellery). Rinse your ring under running water and then gently dry with a cotton or linen cloth. If you’ve got a polishing cloth, run it over your ring to make it shine. Whatever you do, avoid using any chemicals while cleaning your ring.

We recommend getting your engagement ring professionally cleaned right before your wedding so that it sparkles and also once a year to keep your insurance valid. Be sure to avoid touching it when you’ve got it back and only pop it on again on the morning of your wedding.

Know when to take your engagement ring off and when to leave it on

We’ll say this first because it’s the most important - do not take your engagement ring off in public. As tempting as it might be to remove your ring when washing your hands in a public bathroom, just don’t do it. You might leave it behind or accidentally drop it down the drain. In this instance, the wisest way to care for your engagement ring is to keep it on!

However, there are times you should take your ring off and leave it behind. For example, a day at the beach, when you do rigorous exercise and anytime you clean using chemicals. Some people choose to take their ring off when they sleep, and experts say this is a personal decision based on comfort and preference. If your ring isn’t a firm fit, don’t wear it. If your ring is too big or too small you can unintentionally damage it, or worse, lose it! Just take it straight to a jeweller as soon as you notice something is a little off, because if you continue to wear it, you could turn a simple fix into a difficult one.

If you do take your ring off a lot at home, consider having a ring dish on your bedside table, next to your bathroom sink and one in the kitchen too.

Engagement ring insurance

Your engagement ring is an investment and we highly recommend you get it insured. If anything were to happen to your ring, you’d be able to get it fixed, restored or replaced. This peace of mind is worth every penny!
