Don’t: Steal the Spotlight with the Big Announcement
This goes for both the engagement and the wedding. It's tempting to share that you're attending the wedding or celebrating the couple, but resist the urge to break the news before they do. Let the couple have their moment to announce their love story — after all, it's their Big Day!
Do: Honour the Couple’s Wishes
Weddings are personal, and every couple has their own rules. If the couple requests no photos, be respectful and put your phone away. If they ask you to hold off on posting until they do, follow their lead. Many couples are even going the “unplugged” route, asking guests to keep their phones stashed away so everyone can be fully present in the moment.
Don’t: Livestream the Wedding (Unless They Ask!)
Sharing a wedding moment can be exciting, but broadcasting it for the world to see without the couple’s consent is a big no-no. Unless the couple specifically requests it, avoid the temptation to go live and respect their privacy on their special day.
Don’t: Jump to Conclusions
When sharing your own wedding-related posts, keep it neutral. Not all couples change their last name, so avoid assuming they do and congratulating them as “Mr. and Mrs. Smith.” If you’re unsure, stick to “the happy couple” to be safe and always keep your posts thoughtful and considerate.
Don’t: Spill the Surprise
This one’s important well before the wedding day! If you've been lucky enough to have an insider’s view — say, at the bride’s dress fitting — keep that secret under wraps. Posting sneak peeks of the dress before the big reveal can steal her moment and leave her feeling less than fabulous. Wait until after the ceremony, and be sure to only share photos once she’s had her hair and makeup done!
Do: Respect the Photographer’s Space
The couple has hired a professional photographer for a reason — to capture their Big Day in the best possible way. Don’t let your phone get in the way of those picture-perfect moments. Consider how your social media presence might disrupt the photographer’s shot, especially with flashes or your phone hovering in the frame. Besides, no one wants to be caught on camera staring at their phone when they could be in the moment!
Don’t: Post Unflattering Photos
This one’s a given, but we’ll remind you anyway: be selective with your posts. While wedding photos are often abundant, not every shot is flattering. Avoid posting any pics of the couple where they aren’t looking their best — after all, it’s their special day, and they deserve to look fabulous in every photo shared.
Do: Embrace the Wedding Hashtag
If the couple has created a wedding hashtag, use it! It’s their way of collecting all the beautiful moments their loved ones capture. Just make sure your posts are meaningful and highlight the best moments from the day.
Don’t: Be the First to Share
We’ve said it before, but it’s worth repeating: never rush to post! The couple may want their first official wedding announcement to come from a professional shot, not a blurry photo from a guest’s phone. Wait for them to make their first social media move — and if you’re unsure, take a cue from the parents or wedding party. If they post, it’s probably safe for you to do so as well.
With these guidelines in mind, you can enjoy the day, respect the couple's wishes, and capture memories without any social media missteps.
