The Lads’ Morning: Behind the Scenes and All the Craic

The Groom

Sport, laughter, freezing swims, and the calm before the biggest moment of the day, Ros from Couple Photography is bringing us behind the scenes and proving it’s not just the girls who have all the wedding morning fun!

As wedding photographers, we’re used to the buzz of the bridal suite on the morning of a wedding. There’s usually music playing, prosecco flowing, silk robes, sunglasses, and plenty of laughter as the girls get ready together.

But what about the lads?

For years, people imagined the groom’s morning as a quiet affair — a big breakfast, a bit of nervous pacing, and plenty of checking the time before heading to the ceremony. But in recent years, something has changed. The lads’ morning has taken on a life of its own.

Rather than sitting around waiting for the day to begin, grooms and their friends are finding their own way to enjoy the morning and shake off those pre-ceremony nerves. Sometimes it’s a few holes of golf, a competitive game of snooker, or heading outside for a bit of fresh air and sport. We’ve seen lads out on the lawn spinning a basketball, picking up a hurley for a few strikes, or even braving a quick dip in a freezing lake before warming up in a hot tub.

It’s all part of the craic — a chance for the groom to spend time with the people closest to him before one of the biggest moments of his life.

Waking up the right way at Virginia Park Lodge

Many Irish venues really embrace this relaxed start to the day and make it easy for couples to enjoy every part of their wedding morning. Beautiful places like Virginia Park Lodge, Tulfarris Hotel & Golf Resort, Rathsallagh House, Druids Glen Hotel & Golf Resort, and Cliff at Lyons all offer the space and atmosphere where mornings like this can unfold naturally — whether it’s a relaxed breakfast, a walk around the grounds, or a bit of friendly competition before the suits go on.

From a photography point of view, these moments are some of the most genuine parts of the day. There’s no posing, no pressure — just real moments between friends and family.

That’s why many couples now choose to have both of their mornings documented. With Couple Photography, there is the option of a second photographer, each partner’s story can be captured at the same time — the laughter in the bridal suite and the banter with the lads — giving you a fuller picture of the morning when you look back on it.

Because the wedding day itself moves quickly. The morning is one of the few times when everyone can slow down, enjoy the company, and soak in the excitement of what’s about to happen. How will you spend your wedding morning?
