DIY = Do It Yourself.
The wedding DIY trend has evolved from “I need to save some money, so let’s DIY this!” all the way to “I could hire a professional, but I really want to DIY this”. Having the time to make your own decor and add some fun, personal touches is something that a lot of brides really look forward to! That said, we’ve heard some awkward wedding DIY disaster stories, so we are here to save you the trouble. There are some things you can TOTALLY do yourself and a few that you should leave up to the pros!

Pop into any hardware store and you’ll find a bucket of chalkboard paint which you can use to make cute chalkboard signs. Instead of designing and printing out tons of menus for each guest or each table, why not make one big chalkboard sign to display the menu? Have you got a wedding hashtag? Display it on your own handmade sign, like this:

This is something you can put together yourself. All you need is twine, little pegs, a marker and a Polaroid camera. Pick up a cute Instax bundle from Camera Centre and you can use the Polaroid escort cards in your guestbook too!

Wedding music is not something you want to DIY. While it might seem like a good idea to create your own playlist and plug your iPhone into your at-home speaker system, we recommend leaving this up to the professionals. A wedding band, musician or DJ is experienced and will know what type of music to play at specific parts of the wedding day. The pros come with a good quality sound system and they can guarantee a full dance floor all night! Isn’t that what you want?

These days, everybody knows someone who has an excellent camera and an eye for photography. Resist the temptation to save a little bit of money and sacrifice the quality of your photos. Your wedding photos will be with you forever and you want them to blow your mind. A professional photographer is able to keep you feeling comfortable in front of the camera so that you look great in posed photos, while capturing the spontaneous and unplanned moments, as well as commanding the room for those group photos. A helpful friend with a good camera simply won’t offer the same benefits.

There are so many reasons not to take on this task yourself. How will the food be kept warm? Who will serve the food and ensure that there is enough for everyone? Will someone replenish the food during service if you’re doing a buffet? People will talk about good food and they will find a reason to complain about bad food, and we always recommend hiring a professional caterer for something as important as wedding food!

Even the most organised bride isn’t able to handle the wedding coordinating side of things. On the morning of your wedding, you should not be answering the phone when guests can’t find the venue. You should not have to handle wedding suppliers who might be running late. And you certainly shouldn’t have to tell anybody where to set up. This is what a wedding coordinator will handle for you! Having a professional wedding planner or coordinator could be the difference between a wedding that feels personal and handmade, and one that feels cheap and disorganised.
We’ve got some amazing wedding planners and coordinators listed on our site!
