By now, you’ll know just how much time and energy goes into planning a wedding. Add a touch of DIY, and suddenly your to-do list may feel never-ending! While we’re all for adding personal touches to your special day, it’s important not to pile on unnecessary stress. If you’re thinking about incorporating DIY into your celebration, here are five golden rules to help you stay sane and create a successful DIY wedding:

1. Create a mood board
A mood board is your best friend when it comes to keeping your wedding style cohesive. Pull together your colours, textures, and overall vibe, and refer back to it as you dream up DIY projects. It’ll help you stay on track and ensure all the elements work beautifully together.
2. Get help from your bridal party, friends, and family
DIY doesn’t have to be a solo mission! Invite your bridal party, friends, or family to join in. It’s the perfect excuse for a fun weekend crafting session with snacks and drinks—plus, the more hands on deck, the faster you’ll tick things off your list.
3. Choose projects you can make in advance
Trust us—you don’t want to be up to your elbows in glitter and glue two days before your wedding. Focus only on projects that can be finished well ahead of time, so you’re not scrambling at the last minute.
4. Play to your strengths
It’s tempting to try everything, but not every project will be worth the time, money, or effort—especially if it goes wrong. Remember why you’re DIY-ing in the first place - most likely to help save money and add a personal touch to your day. Stick with what you’re naturally good at—be it sewing, calligraphy or painting—and avoid piling up half-finished projects that only add stress.
5. Hunt for treasures in markets and charity shops
Weddings can be wonderfully joyful but also surprisingly wasteful. One way to keep things eco-friendly (and budget-friendly) is to explore markets and charity shops—you’ll be amazed at the hidden gems you can find! After the day, consider donating items back to keep the cycle going.
