Wait, That Costs Extra? Wedding Expenses Nobody Warns You About

Budgets

Planning a wedding comes with endless lists, decisions, and Pinterest boards. But even the most organised couples are often surprised by extra costs that sneak up along the way. From pre-wedding celebrations to post-party cleanup, there are plenty of lesser-known expenses that can catch you off guard. We’ve pulled together a list of unexpected wedding costs you might not have factored into your budget, so you can plan ahead and avoid any last-minute surprises.

Before the Big Day

Outfits for Pre-Wedding Events
You’ve probably budgeted for your wedding day attire, but what about outfits for your engagement party, hen or stag night, rehearsal dinner, or engagement shoot? These can add up quickly if you’re dressing to impress at each event.

Wedding Party Gifts
Thinking of doing those cute bridesmaid proposal boxes? Or thank-you gifts on the day? Make sure you factor in gifts for your bridesmaids, groomsmen, flower girls, and anyone else in your wedding party.

Postage Costs
Sending out printed invitations? Between stamps and envelopes, you might spend anywhere from €30 to €250 just on postage, depending on how many guests you’re inviting and how heavy your invites are.

Morning-Of Food & Drinks
Don’t forget to budget for breakfast or snacks on the morning of the wedding – for yourself and your wedding party. You’ll want to stay fueled (and hydrated!) before all the celebrations begin.

Attire & Beauty

Accessories & Undergarments
Your dress or suit is just one piece of the puzzle. Think veils, shoes, jewellery, shapewear, cufflinks, socks, ties – those extras add up fast.

Beauty Treatments
Hair and makeup are givens, but what about spray tans, facials, massages, mani/pedis, or teeth whitening? These self-care splurges should be included in your budget too.

Hair & Makeup Trials
We highly recommend doing a trial for both hair and makeup – it’s worth the peace of mind. Just don’t forget to include the trial costs in your beauty budget.

Alterations
Most wedding outfits need tailoring. Whether it’s taking in the waist, adjusting the hem, or tweaking sleeves, alterations are often a separate charge – sometimes a few hundred euros extra.

Decor & Setup

Wedding Stationery
Your invites are only part of the story. Don’t forget Save the Dates, RSVP cards, menus, ceremony programmes, place cards, table numbers, and thank-you notes.

Delivery, Setup & Takedown Fees
That gorgeous flower arch or those rental chairs don’t set themselves up. Many suppliers charge extra to deliver, assemble, and collect their items, especially if your venue is off the beaten path.

Ceremony Sound System
If your venue doesn’t have a decent PA system, you might need to rent one – especially if you’re outdoors or want your vows clearly heard. Check if your band or DJ can help with this or if it’s a separate hire.

Your Backup Plan (aka “Plan B”)
Outdoor wedding? Budget for a tent or marquee just in case. You might also need flooring, sidewalls, heaters, or even extra lighting – depending on the weather.

Suppliers & Venue Costs

Feeding Your Suppliers
Your photographer, videographer, DJ, or planner will be with you all day – and they’ll need to eat too. While it doesn’t have to be a three-course meal, be sure to include supplier meals in your catering count.

Service Charges & Tax
Always read the fine print. Are gratuities or service fees included in your venue quote? Is VAT or tax added on top of your supplier invoices? These little extras can make a big dent in your budget if you’re not expecting them.

Extra Time Charges
If your party is going strong and you want to extend the night, you may need to pay for additional time from the venue, staff, DJ/band, and coordinator. Know the cost of keeping the celebration going past the original end time.

Don’t Forget Yourselves!

Include Yourselves in the Headcount
It sounds obvious, but you’d be surprised how many couples forget to count themselves in their dinner numbers. Make sure you’ve included your own meals, seats, and table settings in the total.
