You don’t want bridesmaids. Or groomsmen. Or maybe you’re keeping it really minimal with just a sibling or a best friend by your side. Whatever your reason – I’m here to tell you that’s totally fine.
The wedding industry has spent years convincing us that big wedding parties are the norm. But more and more couples are choosing to skip them – and it’s one of the best ways to keep things simple and true to you.
In this episode, I’ll talk you through what changes and what doesn’t when you plan a wedding without bridesmaids or a traditional wedding party.
WHY COUPLES ARE SKIPPING BRIDESMAIDS
Common reasons you might relate to:
- Wanting to avoid the stress, drama or expense of coordinating a group
- Not wanting to ‘rank’ friends or leave anyone out
- Planning a small/intimate wedding where it feels unnecessary
- Just… not feeling the need to include a wedding party at all
Important takeaway:
You don’t need a wedding party to feel supported, look beautiful or have an amazing day. And skipping it doesn’t make your wedding any less meaningful.
WHAT ACTUALLY CHANGES WHEN YOU DON’T HAVE BRIDESMAIDS
1. The Morning Of
- No matching robes, no group glam squad – and less pressure!
- You can still get ready with your favourite people (friends, siblings, parents), even without the official titles
- Consider inviting 1–2 close friends to get ready with you, informally
Planner tip:
Make sure someone is around to help you with your dress, veil, or last-minute bits – whether it’s a friend, your mam, or your makeup artist.
2. Outfits & Photos
- No need to coordinate dresses, colours or bouquets for others
- Group photos will be more relaxed and less staged
- Focus on couple portraits, family shots, and candid moments
3. Ceremony Roles
- You don’t need a wedding party to have meaningful roles
- Friends/family can:
- Do a reading
- Walk you down the aisle
- Witness your marriage cert
- Help with music or décor
Pro tip:
Worried about the aisle? Walk in solo, with a parent, or with your partner. There’s no one right way to do it.
4. Flowers & Budget
- Massive savings when you’re not doing multiple bouquets and buttonholes
- You can reallocate that budget to other areas: a standout bouquet, better photography, or a ceremony feature
5. Reception Flow
- Speeches? Optional. Bridal party entrance? Optional.
- If you want speeches, just invite whoever feels right to say something
- You don’t need a head table – opt for a sweetheart table or sit with family/friends
HOW TO STAY CONFIDENT IN YOUR CHOICE
- You might get questions: “Wait, no bridesmaids?”
- Just smile and say: “We’re doing it our way – keeping it simple.”
- You don’t owe anyone a long explanation
- Trust yourself
- This is your wedding, not a group project.
- Your friends will still feel important – they don’t need a title for that.
LITTLE WAYS TO INCLUDE PEOPLE WITHOUT HAVING A WEDDING PARTY
- Reading a poem or passage
- Signing the marriage certificate
- Helping with setup or behind-the-scenes logistics
- Giving a toast or speech
- Being your emergency kit holder or veil-fluffer (yes, that’s a thing!)
FINAL THOUGHTS
Encouragement:
No bridesmaids? No problem. Your wedding is still going to be full of love, support, fun and personality. This is just one more way to make the day truly yours.
