While planning your wedding, there will be plenty of big wedding decisions to make. We’re talking about the big hitters – your venue, your photographer, the legal stuff. But there will also be things that pop into your mind, things that aren’t quite as important but you may struggle to find a straight answer for.
So in this podcast episode, we’re covering the 6 things you definitely haven’t thought of yet… but you will at some point. I’ve got the answers for you!
What to do with your engagement ring on your wedding day
Your wedding ring is worn closest to your heart – so how do you get it there on your wedding day with your engagement ring in the way?
- Wear one ring only – works well for couples who plan to solder the two rings together.
- Wear your engagement ring on your right hand for the ceremony – you can move it to your left hand later in the day.
- Wear your engagement ring on your left hand as usual – swap the order of the rings later.
- Don’t wear your engagement ring – if you think you might lose your precious ring with all the swapping, simply don’t wear the engagement ring.
Where to put your lipstick and phone
You may want your phone nearby and some lipstick for touchups later – and things like painkillers, hairclips and gum. But where do you put them?
Pack a little clutch or handbag with all your essentials and delegate the responsibility of keeping this bag to someone you can trust. It can be a bridesmaid or a close friend or your sister. This person may want to keep the bag in the boot of their car for the ceremony and afterwards can then grab the bag and have it easily accessible for you throughout the day.
When to take your last toilet break
On the morning of your wedding, drink lots of water and eat a hearty breakfast. Then, before you put on your wedding dress… wash your hands and go to the loo! You’ll probably be quite nervous, so pee first, put on your dress and try not to drink too much after that. You probably won’t be able to do the wedding dress shuffle to the loo until well after the ceremony.
How to make sure you actually get to eat
While getting ready, you simply need to plan it in. While creating your wedding morning timeline, make sure you add “eat breakfast” to the list. Then delegate a bridesmaid whose sole responsibility for the morning is to make sure you’ve had something to eat and something to drink.
During cocktail hour, you’ll probably be taking photos. Ask your wedding planner or venue coordinator to put some canapes or whatever you’re serving guests into a box and to bring it out to wherever you’ll be taking photos.
Then, for mains, make sure you are served first. That way, by the time speeches kick in or guests start roaming around and want to chat with you, you’ve already had something to eat.
With your cake, ask your wedding planner or venue coordinator to keep a few slices of cake aside and put them into a box. Then get somebody (a bridesmaid or sibling) to put the box in the car you plan to leave the wedding from.
How to hold your bouquet
Put your wrists at your hip bone and hold your bouquet in front of your belly button. Your arms will be a little bent and relaxed, and you won’t be hiding behind your flowers.
Then, tilt your bouquet slightly forward so people will see the flowers and not the stems.
When in doubt, ask your florist:
- Should this bouquet be viewed from the side up and down or as a bunch, angled towards the camera?
- Will the bouquet be heavy when it’s complete?
- Will the stems be short enough that I could angle the bouquet towards the camera without my dress getting wet?
How to make sure your shoes don’t kill your feet
- Wear the right size.
- Scrape the bottoms of your shoes or spray them with hairspray so you don’t slip around.
- Walk around in your shoes and wear them in.
- Use a hairdryer – put on a thick pair of socks, squeeze your feet into your shoes, then use a hairdryer to apply heat to the areas that pinch.
- Bring backups!
