No matter what happens on your wedding day, something will go wrong. It’s just science.
The good news is that if you end up legally married to your partner at the end of the day, you can consider it a success! So no matter what happens, your wedding will be awesome.
But, here’s what to do if things go wrong:
Episode breakdown
Don’t get upset
Now, it’s easier said than done, but it’s important to begin with this one. In almost every possibility, your guests won’t know that something has gone wrong. So if you are worried that their experience will be impacted, don’t be!
Everybody just wants you to have the best time. So relax, enjoy the day and that is what will be fun and memorable for everyone else.
Plan ahead
Think about things that may go wrong, and plan for them. Here are some scenarios:
- Rain at an outdoor wedding: Keep an eye on the weather forecast, hire a beautiful marquee and do whatever you can do to keep everyone warm and dry.
- You wake up with a cold a few days before the wedding: you might not be able to get rid of a cold completely, but you can get your hands on some over the counter drugs to make you feel as good as possible. Drink lots of water!
- Someone spills something on your partner’s shirt: Pack a second shirt now. It’ll come in handy if he gets sweaty on the dance floor and wants to reset. Also, get your hands on an emergency wedding kit! Something with stain remover, and all the essentials for wedding day mishaps.
- A guest is ill and can’t attend: Literally get anyone else to deal with this. If you’ve got your phone, text your friend to let them know you wish they could be there but you hope they get better. Let your wedding party or family ask someone else to come in their place if you want to (pick someone who wouldn’t mind).
- Someone forgets the Marriage Registration Form: You quite literally can’t get married without this. This is the only thing that could go wrong that’s worth stressing over. So make a note RIGHT NOW that you need a plan for your MRF. You could give it to your priest or solemniser at your rehearsal or you could pack it along with the suits the day before the wedding.
Delegate
Make some plans now to have different people oversee different things.
If a guest gets lots, they shouldn’t phone you on their way to your wedding. Have a point person instead.
If a supplier isn’t sure where to set up, they should call your planner, not you.
If you’ve forgotten to plan for something (like who’s taking the cards and gifts home for you?), entrust it all with a family member, person in the wedding party or your planner.
This way, you’ll know that no matter what, someone else will account for any possible mishaps and you won’t be left to fix problems on your wedding day.
Have the right attitude
No matter what happens, your day will be incredible. There is only so much you can do to have a perfect wedding – in fact, there is no such thing as a perfect wedding.
Make the decision now that no matter what happens, you will have an amazing day and you’ll love it!
