When it comes to wedding prep, your hair is just as important as the dress, the venue, and the flowers. After all, your hairstyle frames your face in every photo and adds that finishing touch to your look. But timing is everything, especially when it comes to cutting and colouring your hair in the lead-up to the big day.
Whether you’re planning a glamorous celebration in Dublin or a rustic ceremony in the Irish countryside, here’s your guide to getting your wedding hair just right – and exactly when to do it.
1. Start Planning Early
Ideally, you should start thinking about your wedding hair 6-9 months in advance. If you’re considering a new style, growing your hair, or changing colour, this gives you and your stylist time to plan and adjust. This is especially helpful if you want to try something new but still have time to change course if needed.
Regular trims every 8-10 weeks will keep your hair healthy, and if you’re using any treatments to boost shine or strength, consistency is key.
2. Cut with Care – 2 to 4 Weeks Before the Wedding
You don’t want to cut your hair too close to the big day. A trim about 2 to 4 weeks before your wedding is the sweet spot. This allows time for the ends to settle while still looking fresh and healthy.
If you’re making a big change (like adding layers or a fringe) aim to do this 2–3 months in advance, so you have time to adjust to the new look and your stylist can fine-tune things closer to the day.
3. Colouring? Aim for 1 to 2 Weeks Before
For colour, timing is crucial. You’ll want your colour to look vibrant and fresh, but still natural and settled. Getting it done 1 to 2 weeks before the wedding allows the colour to tone down slightly (especially for blondes or vivid tones) and gives you time to fix anything, just in case.
If you’re trying a new shade or technique, such as balayage, highlights, or lowlights, start trialling at least 3-4 months before. You can refine the look over a few appointments, so by the time the wedding rolls around, it’s exactly what you envisioned.
4. Don’t Forget Hair Trials
If you’re working with a hairstylist for the big day, book a trial a few months beforehand. Ideally after a cut and colour appointment, so you’re working with your actual wedding hair. Bring along any accessories you’re planning to wear, like veils or pins, and have photos of your dress to guide the overall look.
5. Keep It Local and Trusted
Ireland is full of brilliant salons, from boutique hairdressers in Cork to city stylists in Belfast. Choose a professional who knows your hair and understands wedding timelines. If you’re getting married away from home, consider trialling someone local to your venue and book early, because summer and holiday weekends can fill up fast.
