I always encourage a 12 month hair plan ahead of a trial appointment. I myself can facilitate this however some brides may have their own stylist already planning this with them.

At the hair plan I would look at products the client is using along with vitamin supplements etc… Depending on the brides hair colour or hair colour goals, I will always advise products that best suit your needs.

Each bride had individual needs. My knowledge would range from Revlon to Redkin and Olaplex, it’s important to use the right shampoo or conditioner to suit their hair needs and budget.

The brides choice of look half up or down, upstyle with face framing. All those details need planning, from trims to promote growth and products that boost vitality, along with the correct hair supplements. Always check with your GP before taking any supplements.

The best foundation yields the best results, so 12 months prior to your wedding is the time to begin to focus on improving the condition and growth! At home treatments and regular trims are essential. While it may seem counterproductive, having your hair regularly trimmed will remove dead ends which will only lead to breakage and slower growth.

Usually my top tips are: Refrain from using heat on your hair as much as possible and always use a heat protector if you do need to style.

Reduce bleaching and highlighting to essential maintenance only. Always use a bond builder when bleaching and never overlap onto already bleached hair.

Use weekly treatments to repair damage. Using quality salon products specific to your hair type will enhance shine and condition. Your regular salon will be able to advise on  their recommended products to get your hair in optimum condition for the day itself!

Aim to do you final colour two weeks before the wedding day to allow it time to settle! Your hair will be photographed from every angle, here’s how to make sure it is looking fab:

Blondes consider adding low-lights, this will give it additional texture and depth in photos which helps define and enhance your hairstyle. Your hair will be sitting on the backdrop of a white dress, which means some blondes will show up as yellow! You might need to use an ash or pearl toner to ensure you have a lovely clean blonde, talk to your stylist about different options at least six months in advance as it may take trial and error to get the perfect shade to suit you.

Dark hair aim for the ultimate shine, your tresses may not show up texture and detail in the same way blondes do. To get the best shine and texture in your hair, use a conditioning Quasi colour through the ends. I recommend adding chocolate toned lowlights through the ends. Think low maintenance and subtle. This will add depth to the hair and help define the details of your style, giving your locks an added glam look for the big day.

For consistent and reliable results, always go to experienced haircare professionals in the run-up to your wedding.

Few things frame the glow of a bride like a crown of healthy hair. Whether you dream of flowing waves tumbling over your shoulders, a sleek, chic updo, or intricate braids adorned with flowers, the weeks and months leading up to your wedding present a golden opportunity to nurture your hair to its most vibrant potential. Growing your hair longer and stronger is a gradual process—one that requires patience, self-care, careful planning, and a touch of science.

  • Revamp Your Diet: Hair is primarily composed of keratin, a protein. Prioritise foods rich in proteins (like eggs, fish, poultry, legumes), iron (spinach, lentils), zinc (nuts, seeds), biotin (sweet potatoes, almonds), and vitamins (A, C, D, E).
  • Stay Hydrated: Hydration is essential for scalp health and cell regeneration. Aim for at least 2 litres (about 8 glasses) of water per day.
  • Consider Supplements: If your diet lacks certain nutrients, consult your doctor about taking multivitamins or hair-specific supplements. My personal favourite is Simon Ourian’s Radiance, which I take every day, that is a blend of Collagen, Acai and Ashwagandha, and does wonders for your skin and nails too!
  • Prioritise Scalp Health: A healthy scalp is the bedrock of hair growth. Incorporate a gentle exfoliating scalp scrub biweekly to remove buildup and stimulate blood flow. Like Voduz “CLEAR IT” or their “BUFF IT” exfoliating scalp brush, which can be used every time you wash.
  • Massage Matters: Dedicate 5 minutes a day to massaging your scalp, either with your fingers or a massage tool, to boost circulation and follicle activity.
  • Book your final colour appointment so your colour is fresh, and no roots are showing if you have a full global colour.
  • Hydration and Moisture: Focus on hydrating masks and leave-in conditioners to give your hair a final boost of shine and softness.  But stop deep conditioning treatments one week before your big day, as you don’t want your hair to soft to style on the day.
  • •Protect from the Elements: Sun, wind, and salt water can all compromise hair health. Wear hats or scarves and use UV protection sprays when outdoors for extended periods.
  • Be Patient: Hair growth is a journey, not a sprint. Celebrate small milestones along the way and document your progress with periodic photos.

Hair thinning and loss can happen for many different reasons, which makes it hard to give one size fits all advice. If you’re noticing more hair loss than usual, the first step should always be to see your GP for a blood test to rule out a physical health issue.

Hair loss can also be situational — triggered by stress, nutritional deficiencies, life events like postpartum changes, or even genetics. While there’s some anecdotal evidence that hair loss shampoos may help with hair growth, it’s important to look at the evidence and make informed decisions before investing in products.

There are some really simple steps you can do to focus on your overall hair health that are proven to help:

Use a shampoo and conditioner suited to your hair AND SCALP needs, ideally sulfate and paraben free. Scalp health is essential.

Limit heat styling and always use heat protection.

Be gentle when brushing and tying your hair up to reduce breakage. Hair is more vulnerable when wet so be mindful of this.

Sleep on a silk or satin pillowcase.

Get regular trims, even a tiny snip off your ends.

Avoid harsh chemical treatments which can weaken hair.

Eat a balanced diet.

If your hair hasn’t grown as much as you would like for your wedding day I would say all is not lost!

As bridal hairstylists our main goal is to help you feel confident and happy. We work with you to show you the potential of your hair. We use certain products and techniques to give the appearance of more hair such a backcombing and spreading out the hair to add fullness, strategic placement of hair extensions or using coloured scalp powder to disguise any areas where the scalp may show through.

Healthy Scalp = Healthy Hair: Start a scalp-care routine. Gently massage your scalp 2–3 times a week with natural oils (like rosemary or argan oil) to encourage circulation and growth.

• Nutrition First: Focus on a balanced diet rich in protein (fish, eggs, beans), iron, zinc, and omega-3s. Supplements like biotin or hair-specific multivitamins may also help.

• Gentle Washing: Switch to a sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner to avoid stripping natural oils.

• Say No to Overprocessing: Avoid strong chemical relaxers, bleach, or excessive colouring. If you plan on colouring, now is the time to transition to a gentler routine.

• Trial Your Bridal Style: Work with your stylist to do a test run,  then you’ll know if you need more volume, length, or extensions.

• Shine & Smoothness: Use lightweight hair oils or serums to keep frizz at bay without weighing hair down.

• Gentle Handling: Use a silk pillowcase and switch to a wide-tooth comb to reduce friction and breakage.

• Avoid Last-Minute Chemicals: Skip any drastic colour changes or chemical straightening within this timeframe – it risks dryness and breakage before the big day.

• Drink plenty of water – hydration shows in your hair and skin.

• Manage stress, high stress can contribute to hair shedding.

• If you notice unusual thinning, consult a professional early for tailored advice.
