I'd have to agree with everyone who suggested A Thousand Splendid Suns. Its by an Afghan author called Khaled Hosseini. Finished the book over a year ago and I still remember the details, it really makes you think about how life can be so different for some people to the comfort that we enjoy here! And what really struck me is that its set quite recent! Some of the things you'd expect to hear happening back years and years ago, not in our lifetime! Or, what about The Boy In The Striped Pyjamas? Told so simply which makes it all the more poignant!
