Hi All. I've decided to go Private on this pregnancy - But I am really confused. I was looking up some websites and from what I gather they say - If you are a private patient in a public hospital - threre could be additional costs - not just your consultants (which is €3200 and the only cost i have catered for). They mentioned epidural, paying for anethestic....etc.... I will be attending UCH in Galway. Has anyone experience and advice. I can just about justify the €3200 ( and I have VHI cover) but If I end up paying thousands extra ..I will have to reconsider. Please advise?

From what I'm aware the epidural, bed etc are all covered under the hospital stay by your VHI (or whatever cover ya have), but obviously I havent had my baby yet! Maybe post over in Mums and Kids..they'd be talking from experience or talk to some 2nd time mums

You might want to check if scans are included in the private fees - they're not huge money though. I've paid €60 for dating and €160 for the anolomy scans. I found the customer services agents in VHI very helpful in explaining everything to me when I first got our BFP - give them a buzz. Congratulations on the BFP :o)ll :o)ll :o)ll :o)ll

Ring the secretary and ask, Id no extra's but there is something in coombe about if you get induced and have private room night before you have to pay but most people just go to public ward have baba and then into the private room.

went private on both our LOs. As mentioned you have to pay for any scans or at least i did have to in the Coombe. I ended up having 4 anolomy scans on the pregnancy with DS and you had to pay each time. I think there is a maximum limit to where you no longer pay for scans. i was induced on DD but in a 6 bed ward when I was given the gel. I got my private room after both deliveries. . VHI covered the epidural and bed fees. DS was also referred for specialist care and it covered that as well. best of luck and congrats on your pregnancy. :o)ll :o)ll

I went private both on both pregnancies and the only extra I had to pay for was the 20-week scan, which was €110. This is because it's done by the sonographer and not the consultant. However, you can claim this back on your health insurance anyway. The rest of the costs are covered by your health insurer. HTH!

Agree with Wife09 - ring and check. I am public in CUMH but I know the booklet says that if you are attending a consultant you are considered private in the hospital and have to pay private room fees - so if you do need to be induced you will need to pay ~ €900 which may or may not be covered by your health insurance - that's for Cork so not sure if the same applies for Galway.

Going private also. Haven't paid for anything extra except for consultant fees. All my scans etc (2 in hospital - anomaly and growth scans) are covered. Hospital and private room covered by BUPA/Quinn.

As far as I know VHI only cover 3 nights in hospital.. if you have a section you can be there for 5 nights so would have to pay the extra yourself which is roughly 750 a night in the Coombe.

They cover 3 nights for normal delivery and 5 for section. But if something is wrong with the BABY like if they have to have light therapy if jaundice and you need few extra nights in VHI wont cover it. But if theres a medical reason for YOU i.e BP still high or something then they do pay for the extra nights.
