Hi girls, when and how did you decide which hospital and which consulatant to go to? I haven't a clue and can't really ask friends/family without them. My sil went to Mount Carmel and I remeber her recommending it highly - but it's just so pricey. Don't know it i could justify the money. My other options would be the combe or the rotunda. Also do I need to book a private 12 week scan at whichever hospital I pick?

Hey buttons. First congrats on ur good news :o)ll Hope it all goes well for U. I was in the same situation and kept asking the girls at work for their opinions on the Dublin maternity hospitals for a "friend" :o0 To be honest though I decided to go with the Coombe because it was closest and it seemingly has a good special care unit. You'll hear good and bad stories about any hospital. A lot depends on who U deal with on ur visits or when ur in for delivery. I went semiprivate so didn't get to choose a consultant but I couldn't fault the doctors I dealt with. I would always go to a specialist public unit though. They will have more specialist expertise available to them if u run into bother. Best of luck whatever u decide :thnk [/color:1qmv98ew]

Congratulations! There is a big thread here on debating the public vs private debate - you will always get pros and cons on both sides of the debate. There's also a recent one on Mount Carmel if you search - should be still on first page or two. I decided to go private in Holles St, and have found it great so far. Its only about half the price of Mount Carmel but still get private care. Some people would argue its not even worth paying that. Either way you are better off to decide sooner rather than later. If you private the consultants fill up quickly, and if you go public you also get your appointments earlier the earlier you call them .

Thanks Lilac and Babystar. I read through those threads Am still am bit confused - if i decide to go semi private do i just ring the hospital and they assign me to a consultant/team? How much does it cost to go semi private or private in eithet the coombe or the rotunda ?

Yep Buttons. they just assign U to whatever team are taking patients the day u call so u don't get to pick. It didn't bother me though because I didn't know anything about any consultants and I didn't have a preference. It cost us €750 + €100 per scan with my Quinn health insurance. I had two scans with them but the docs also did a small scan at each visit. It was so lovely to see little bean growing :lvs :lvs :lvs I don't regret going semiprivate but I think I'll go public if I'm lucky enough to have a second child. The main reason I went SP was because I wasn't sure what was ahead of me and also because I didn't want to be in a room with too many people after DS was born. In fairness I had the curtains pulled a lot of the time getting the hang of breastfeeding so there could have been 12 people in the room :o0 I went for a private scan to Charlemount clinic near The Barge pub at 12 weeks. I thing it was €120 but well worth it :lvs (I'm still smiling at the thought of the scans! It's just so special to be able to see ur LO)[/color:rwec03je]

We went privately in the Rotunda and couldn't recommend them enough!! Our consultant was fantastic and wouldn't consider anyone or anywhere else when we decide on #2. Our VHI covered everything bar consultants fees which are 4k. HTH

I went to the Coombe on both my boys. I went public on my first would not do it again. Nothing to do with the care it was fine, but my baby was premature and I spent two weeks on a ward with not so nice people coming and going, my babas clothes were robbed and all. I think I was just particularly unlucky. I went private on my second and It was a totally different experience. My consultant was brilliant and when babs was born I ended up on a semi private ward which was lovely. Im trying for no 3 and am saving my pennies for private already :o0

Thanks girls for all the advice. I rang vhi to see what I would be covered for and it's a bit better then i initially though. The girl I was talking to was so nice and congradulated me and gave me the number for the nurseline too. I also rang the Rotunda private to fund out about there costs. it works out about 3k (after vhi claims). I'll try tolring the coombe tomorrow to find out about there consultants costs. Dublin bride -which consultant did you pick in the rotunda? The girl there told me the fees range from 3,300 to 4,500 depending on who you pick. She told me to view there profiles on their website and give her a call back and she could give me the exact fees.

He was soo encouraging during labour and performed the forceps delivery I required himself and did all the "tidy up" of me after. Came up to see us the 2 mornings after I had DD as well before 9am in the morning!! Lovely man and makes you feel so relaxed about everything!! Worth every penny will definetly use him on #2 please God *)
