How do I clean the grill part of elec oven?

Might seem like a ridiculous question girls but when we turn on the grill of our electric oven (Zanussi) it just smokes the place up so I assume it needs to be cleaned? How do I do this?

you need to leave the door of the grill open and it wont smoke then i found this worked for me anyways

This can happen because of the build up of fat that splatters onto the element. I remove the dirt of food from the element and I also wash it down with luke warm water. Stops all the smoke.

Thank you ladies will try the lukewarm water, wasn't sure what was safe to use. I do leave the door open, it's def build up...you would think I used it more than I do
