Senior partner has just asked me would I consider covering maternity leave in another sector. This would mean more experience for myself and I would get my own job back when the girl returns from maternity leave. I've been weighing up the pros and cons but my main concern is, would I really return to my own job when I come back?? Would love to take the chance and it is the kind of experience that I have been waiting for? Any suggestions?

Go for it! Surely you'll sign contracts to say you'll get your old job back.

Get everything in writing, extra responibilites the lot, extra pay, the terms under which you'll return to your old job etc. In our dept its common for people to "act up" to cover maternity leave and then return to normal duties afterwards, we work in a specialised area so its very difficult to get people to do the work we do from outside. I'd go for it, I'd love a chance to gain more experiance.

Thanks girls. It came straight out of the blue so I was completely shocked. Will def get everything in writing and signed by both senior partners if it goes ahead. Just gotta get it passed by the other senior partner, he is on hols and not back til Monday. I'm looking forward to it now, would be disappointed if it doesnt go ahead... Like lux said, love gaining more experience
