Can you use this instead of a moses basket/crib/cot for the first while? Is it suitable for sleeping in during the day and at night?

Yes for sure. we used it during the day and put it in to the big cot for the first while, at night. was easer than waking up DD to put her in the crib that we used also. great for wlaks too as they can lie flat out while they are small babies and you get to go outside too- blessing

Thanks Rocky. I'm going to get a carrycot anyway (for the reasons you gave), so was hoping not to have to get a moses basket also.

Yes its fine to use Hokey Cokey.They do recommend though that you buy the seperate nighttime vented mattress (that would be in a moses basket) to use at night.We bought our nighttime mattress in Mothercare and will just pop it in at night.
