Unity candles - do they need to be religious?

Having a catholic ceremony and were thinking of doing our own unity candles rather than get someone else to - but do they need to be religious, having crosses etc on them? I've never gotten up close to unity candles at someone else's wedding to know what is acceptable!

No need to be religious - ours were plain ivory from penneys

I am not sure what your church/priest might require. But if you are able to create your own, there are some fun ways to put something together!! We pieced ours together with "lettered" votives ("Q" for the groom's last name and "G" for the bride's last name) and a tall pillar from Harvey Norman. We set these three pieces on/in Newgrange art glass pieces. We also got a candle stand from IKEA for the main pillar.
