DIY Tutorial: Love Cake Topper

Cakes, Décor & Flowers

We’re so excited to share with you the first of our monthly DIY posts! And we think you’re going to love what our resident DIYers have put together for you. First up is a fabulous floral cake topper – not only does it look amazing but most importantly it is easy to make.

There are a few benefits to a really simple wedding cake. First, they can be cheaper because they take less time to make than intricately decorated cakes, and second, you get the opportunity to put your own spin on them with a little DIY project. This wire word cake topper is simple, inexpensive, and fully customisable to your wedding colours and personal taste. The hardest part will be choosing which word to use, the options are endless! Happy crafting…

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

pretty printed fabric, about 1/4 metre
hot glue gun
craft wire
scissors
drink stirrer or skewer

What to do:

1. Decide on the word you’d like to create – keep in mind the longer the word, the wider it will be. You’ll want to make sure your word isn’t too long for the width of your cake.

2. Straighten out a length of your craft wire and begin shaping it into cursive letters. Sometimes it helps to type out your word in a cursive font on the computer so you have something to use as your guide. It doesn’t have to be perfect to start, you’ll be able to mould it a little once it’s wrapped in fabric.

3. Cut one inch strips of your fabric to start. Use a bit of hot glue to secure the first strip of fabric to the end of the wire and begin wrapping the wire around and around. Every so often, add a little bit of hot glue to secure the fabric. When you run out of fabric, just use another bit of hot glue to secure the next strip.

4. Once the word is fully wrapped, add a little hot glue to the drink stirrer or skewer and attach it to the back of the centre of the word. If your word is especially long, you can use two drink stirrers to make it more stable. On the big day, simply insert the cake topper into the cake and voilà! Your own twist on a gorgeous white cake!
