It’s no secret that us Irish are an awful superstitious bunch altogether. The turning point for me was watching Darby O’Gill and The Little People when I was eight and the nightmares that followed. But why, as grown-ups, are we still afraid of fairies and hocus-pocus? And why do so many couples still choose not to get married on Friday 13th? If we could only learn to throw caution to the wind, there are certain advantages to getting married on Friday 13th…

1) It’s easy to remember
There’s no fear of any of your guests forgetting and double-booking themselves for this date, as everybody will be talking about your Friday 13th wedding. Anniversaries will also be super easy to remember, so there’s no excuse!
2) You can have a laugh with it!
Providing you’re not superstitious, you could incorporate the unusual date into your theme, by getting married under a ladder instead of an arch or decorating your venue with black cats and open umbrellas.
3) Discounts
The big one! Take advantage of other people’s superstition! The majority of Irish people are superstitious when it comes to getting married on Friday 13th, which leaves a whole lot of wedding suppliers at a loose end. The Hotel Meyrick in Galway and The Brehon Hotel in Killarney are just two venues that are willing to negotiate a discount with couples on this not-so-sought-after date, while Wedding Cars Ireland, Alan Mc Carthy videography and Kathy Silke photography also offer a Friday 13th discount. Alan Mooney photography on the other hand, reckons photographers should actually charge extra ‘danger money’ for leaving the house on Friday 13th. (Joke!)
There’s five more Friday 13ths on the way in the next two years:
Dec 13th 2013
June 13th 2014
Feb 13th 2015
March 13th 2015
November 13th 2015
