Sweet Tables and Candy Buffets – The Irish Way

Inspiration

The candy buffet is one wedding trend that won’t be going anywhere fast, and is a great way to add colour to your reception room. With clever styling, a sweet table can be a feast for the eyes as much as a feast for the stomach. Read on to find out how to add an authentic Irish twist to this American trend.

White buttons, marshmallows and pink mice will keep the kids happy in between their knee slides on the polished floor, and they complement blush colourways beautifully. Fill the table with clear jars, cake stands and pretty plates to keep the confectionery on show. A little lace, a few flowers and you’ve got an instagram-ready feature.

For choice of shade, you can’t beat boiled sweets. A favourite among grannies nationwide, they are super affordable and come in every colour from baby blue to fiery red. And hey, they don’t call ’em gobstoppers for nothing; pass a handful to the resident druncle (the drunk uncle, of which there is always one, accompanied by the apologetic aunt) to be sure that you don’t have to hear about his turf cutting skills for the third time this hour.

Throw back to the days when a twenty-pence coin pressed into your hand after mass bought you a stock of sweets that’d last the week with a glut of eighties candy. Refreshers, Touchdown bars, Desperate Dans – the cream of the Irish sweet crop, basically. Our favourites are retro Love Heart candies – plus a number of vendors can customise the message with the date of your wedding, a swish monogram or whatever variation on the traditional ‘LUV 4 EVER ‘ you’re comfortable with. Brightly-coloured wrappers suit neon weddings and can be set up in mis-matched bowls to hit the shabby-chic spot.

The candy buffet is an American trend, so put an Irish twist on it by stocking it with biscuits, prime for the dipping. Guests will be gasping for a cuppa after the ceremony, and what better to go with it than a fistful of Custard Creams? Unique, crowd pleasing and budget-friendly.

Gold and cream make for a wholly traditional palette, so mix it up with a modern eats and treats selection. Metallic wrapping and finishing on containers will keep things flowing without looking gaudy, and chocolate complements the rich colouring well. If you’re very fond of your guests, white and golden Lindt balls, though pricey, taste as decadent as they look.
