Engagement, Planning & Advice

We’re lucky to live a (mostly) short flight away from some of the world’s most desirable city break destinations – especially where romance is concerned. There are so many romantic European cities to discover – famous ones, and lesser-known ones as well. Here is part one of our 20 best places to visit when you’re in love.

Krakow, Poland – the country’s foremost tourist attraction, it boasts a main square listed as one of Unesco’s World Heritage sites. Everyone who goes there finds something to love – the food, the drinks, the hospitality, or getting lost among the streets in the Old Town. This immensely photogenic city (see above) is good for those watching the budget too, being less expensive than other major European tourist attractions. If you have to pick just one destination in Eastern Europe, make it this one.

Capri, Italy – the first of our four Italian cities… could it be that Italy turns out the be the most romantic place in the world? Well, the reputation is well-deserved, and Capri has a lot to do with it. Perfect views, pastel-coloured houses in the harbour, the famous clock atop the cliff, cafés with rattan chairs… if you want a really dizzying experience, climb as far up the mountain as you can, and enjoy the views along the way. As soon as you get there, you’ll know why it’s a place celebs just love to visit to kick back and relax.

Delft, The Netherlands – most people make Amsterdam their first Dutch port of call (and we haven’t left it off our list, see below), but you simply must consider Delft. Some say it’s a smaller version of Amsterdam, and indeed there are similarities, including the canals. But Delft is postcard-perfect, the birthplace of Vermeer, and the home of the famous blue pottery. It’s perfect to visit all year round, and if hanging out in cafés and watching the world pass you by is your favourite thing to do, Delft is the place to do it, while holding hands.

Vienna, Austria – it’s amazing how this capital city is so well-known, yet hardly anyone has ever been there. This, in our eyes, makes it your perfect romantic destination you can boast about – and make no mistake, there’s plenty to see and do there. From the famed classical music concerts, to the world-renowned Sacher Torte (chocolate cake so good, some say it made them cry), in Vienna you could seriously lose your heart. Places you must see – the Volksgarten full of roses, the gold statue of Strauss (the father of waltz) and get an aerial view from the Prater amusement park, featuring the famous Ferris wheel from The Third Man.

Genoa, Italy – the second of our Italian destinations, Genoa doesn’t get as many tourists as the country’s other major destinations, which is a huge plus. Still a working port, it’s a birthplace of Paganini, Columbus, pesto, and some say – modern banking. Here, you’ll never ask yourself ‘what to do?’ because there are plenty of options, including cultural pursuits, great food, and dolphin-watching.

Paris, France – still reigning as Europe’s most romantic city, there isn’t much that hasn’t been said about Paris already. Yes, it’s busy, it’s loud, and it can be expensive, but we’d like to suggest to do it a little differently – forget the sightseeing, and go for total relaxation. Bring a good book – or if you’re brave, buy a French magazine when you get there and have a go at reading it – find your favourite café, walk along the Seine, take some black-and-white photos, and explore the city’s parks. Sometimes, the best memories are made when you’re taking it slowly.

Barcelona, Spain – a major destination for the lovers of architecture, it’s got a romantic heart that’s not hard to discover. Make sure to bring your camera to keep those memories alive once you’ve returned, and there will be plenty to remember – lazy picnics in the park, boat cruises, and you simply must see a sunset from the Santa Maria del Mar cathedral.

Venice, Italy – a serious contender to Paris in the romance stakes, Serenissima is a city for those who like to explore by foot, hand-in-hand. There are many canal cities in the world – but there’s just something about Venice that’s different. People go there to get inspired, to dream, or to get lost in her mysteries. Even the sight of it appearing out of the waters as you approach in your taxi-boat is amazing to behold. Make sure to buy an authentic mask as a souvenir of your trip, and bring a camera – you’ll regret it if you don’t.

Rome, Italy – yes, Rome is busy all year round, expensive if you’re not careful, and even overwhelming – but it’s a city every couple should visit once in their life. We have a soft spot for Rome after watching Julia Roberts’s adventures (with food and sightseeing) in Eat, Pray, Love – and it really seems like a place to let go and enjoy every single moment together. Make sure to kiss in front of the Trevi Fountain.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands – much like Paris, Amsterdam needs no introduction. People visit it for many reasons, but until you’ve seen some sunsets (or sunrises) along the canals, you won’t feel like you’ve seen anything at all. Amsterdam looks fantastic, rain or shine, and there is plenty to do for couples, aside from getting lost walking along the canals. You simply must see Amsterdam by night, when the canals are lit up like it’s Christmas, also take a sightseeing boat cruise, and shop in the Bloemenmarkt. For a dash of culture, pick a museum – they have everything, from saucy to high-culture. You’ll be telling stories for days when you come back.
