Instead of being annoyed with the rain that kept on falling, our couple today Kim and John looked on the bright side and danced in it! Their day was a fun, family filled occasion with many of the guests travelling from Kim’s native America. Thanks to Tara Donoghue Photography for sharing this Irish-American wedding with us.
Both Managers at a medial device company, Kimberley, who is from Colorado met John through a mutual friend at work in 2010.
“Many of our first conversations were filled with laughter all the time. It was so easy to get along and we loved being together, so we knew what we had was special,” explained Kim. The couple got engaged in Paris during a New Year break.
“John proposed in front of the Pantheon after we had dinner in a small restaurant in the Latin Quarter. After popping the question we headed back to the restaurant to celebrate!” added Kim.
Being thousands of miles across the Atlantic Ocean, Kim and John depending a lot on Skype and the internet for planning their New Years day wedding, as well as the help of John’s parents.
“John’s parents took pictures for us of possible reception and ceremony locations and we saw the church and reception venue a few days before the wedding for the first time. We definitely took a less is more approach, avoiding some more detailed items that we didn’t feel were necessary to fully enjoy the day and would have been difficult to coordinate overseas,” said Kim.
Kim struck lucky with her wedding dress choosing the very first dress she tried on!
“My twin sister (the maid of honour and my only bridesmaid) booked an appointment at the Bridal Collection in Denver Colorado during a weekend trip home. The dress was the first one I tried on at that shop – it was important for me to feel comfortable on my wedding day and the dress was perfectly suited to my style,” she explained. Kim let her twin sister and flower girl, Katie choose their own dresses, to ensure they felt comfortable during the day.
“We didn’t really have a theme, except sticking to a blue and grey tones after my twin sister chose a navy blue dress. Planning across the ocean we kept things simple, choosing to focus on just ensuring we had a great, relaxed day with our family and friends, which we did. The day went wonderfully – lots of rain and wind which made for really fun pictures! We had a great time with family and friends from all over America and Ireland. The Americans were surprised to learn that Irish weddings last until the next morning but most stuck through it until 4 or 5am, including my parents!” said Kim.
Wedding Highlight
Kim: Sitting at the top of the church at the start of the ceremony. I hadn’t seen John since the day before so it was exciting to catch up about what happened that morning; I forgot we were in a room full of people!
John: Seeing Kimi when she came in the church.
Kim’s Advice: Determine what is most important to you and don’t worry as much about the rest. Enjoy the day!
