Our First Dance Song

Planning & Advice

Finding the perfect first dance song might not be as easy as you think. For some couples it’s ‘their song’, the one that was playing when they first kissed or when they first laid eyes on each other, but for those of you who don’t have a song or whose song might not suit a first dance (e.g. ‘Highway to Hell’, ‘Love Stinks, ‘Tainted Love’ – you get the jist) there’s plenty of choices out there! The perfect song should be meaningful, makes both of you happy and something that you can dance to – that includes swaying!

Make a shortlist of the songs you like and then start listening to them. Put them on in the car, the kitchen, when you’re out for a walk, or when you’re both at home and dance to them. If there’s a particular song that makes your heart skip a beat or gives you a tingle down your spine, then you’re onto a winner!

Here’s what the ladies on the WeddingsOnline.ie Forums are doing for their ‘first dance’:

We had ‘Falling Slowly’ by Glen Hansard, not the most ‘conventional’ choice and there was definitely a few raised eyebrows! But we loved it and it had the perfect tempo for my other-half who is not a dancer and was dreading the first dance. Whenever I hear the song I get a little flutter. We’ve gone on to use it on the wedding DVD, which was great too! – Daisy Row

We had a howl with our first dance. All the way through planning it, we wanted to do something a little different – something that would kick off the party and get the crowd going. But we wanted to do it in a way that no one would expect – start off with a slow song that we would dance very timidly to, and then break out into a fully choreographed dance. It was a bit of hunt to try to find rock or alternative songs that would fit what we wanted. Then, almost completely by accident, my OH stumbled across a YouTube video of Robert Plant singing at the Freddy Mercury Tribute concert. Singing a medley of one of my favourite Led Zeppelin songs ‘Thank You’ and breaking into Queen’s ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’. Perfect! Somehow we managed to keep it as a complete surprise from everyone, and it worked out well. I still think one of my favourite memories of the day was hearing the screams and cheers when we started into ‘Crazy’. It was such a high at the end realising we’d managed it! It really got the party going as well – everyone was out on the dance floor after that! To anyone considering doing a choreographed first dance, just do it! It was so much fun! I still break out in a grin and feel my feet tapping now anytime I hear ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Love’ on the radio! See their surprise first dance here! – game on

Wedding BlogWe’re thinking of using ‘The Prayer’, quite a religious undertone but we’re willing to look past that as the message in the song is so lovely and very moving! – FutureMrsS

We are thinking of a ‘Thousand Years’ by Christina Perri – AwkwardAnnie

We had ‘Warm’ by The Coronas! I just love the song because one NYE we went to Coppers, yes Coppers, and The Coronas were playing and my now DH said this time next year we’ll be engaged and I knew that moment we were just going to be together forever. The Coronas have a special place in our relationship! – craigsmrs

We’re tossing between Michael Buble, ‘Hold On’ and The Coronas, ‘Warm’. We absolutely love both, so we’re seriously struggling to decide. Some days I think the build up in ‘Hold On’ is fab and that ‘Warm’ is a little too slow and then I hear the Coronas and I’m stuck again! – Jojobean

We are having Tom Baxter ‘Better’! – excitedjuly12

We are going to have Jackie Wilson’s, ‘Higher and Higher’ as it’s a very important song for my OH and we both love the lyrics. We defo need to plan a dance to it though! – notabridezilla

We had ‘Earth Angel’ from the soundtrack of Back to the Future – atina
