Tips for Destination Weddings in Malta and Europe

Destination Weddings

Let me first introduce myself – I am Franklin the wedding photographer behind FBalzan Photography and I have had the privilege of capturing countless love stories unfold across the breathtaking landscapes of Malta and in Europe. Destination weddings are my favourite type of weddings, as I get not only to make friends with couples from abroad but also get to experience with them a once in a lifetime blend of romance, adventure, and breathtaking scenery!

Whether you’re planning a grand affair or an intimate elopement, I wanted to share with you some essential considerations and tips to help you plan and execute your dream destination wedding.

  1. Choose the right destination

If you are choosing to travel to another country for your special day – then you surely would have taken the time to research the specific region and potentially also the different wedding venues possible.  There is probably a particular reason why you decided to get married in a particular country – maybe it’s a sentimental reason, a vacation which you particularly loved, due to a family connection or simply an idea which has come to your mind through social media.  I would definitely suggest you do actually visit the country and region in person before you commit to any decision.

  1. Consider travel logistics

If you are considering Malta as your wedding destination, then you don’t have to worry about the region since Malta is indeed small and all locations are within reach.    The only choice you need to make is whether the wedding will be on the island of Malta or the island of Gozo (Gozo is a small island which is reachable by a ferry and most suppliers like myself will be able to provide you with a service to both).  To give you an idea on the distances we’re talking about here, the trip duration from the airport to Gozo would be around 30minutes to get to the ferry and another 30minutes to cross the ferry! So reaching any photoshoot location or venue is manageable, as long as you allow the time. But if you are opting for other European destinations, make sure to take travelling logistics and time in consideration in your itinerary.

  1. Choose the right venue

Now once you have decided on the destination country and potentially region where you wish to have your wedding take place, you want to find the venue which aligns with your vision.  Unless you are looking for mountains or glaciers views, I consider that Malta has a sufficient variety of venues which will cater for all the different preferences – be it a beach wedding, a rustic wedding, vineyard wedding, outdoor wedding or a luxurious wedding feel.

Choosing your wedding venue, means also choosing the location in which you will be preparing for your big day.  I sometimes have to work in cramped hotel rooms which obviously I know how to navigate but I am sure that everyone involved would much prefer if the room was a little bit bigger or maybe if a farmhouse could have been rented instead to make the preparation part even more special.

  1. Partner with experienced professionals

When you are planning a destination wedding from abroad, having a person or team of people who know the country can be so beneficial.  You can never have the knowledge and exposure to local aspects and have the necessary contacts like a planner or organiser has.  Apart from ensuring that you have a point of reference for your special day, you also have a person or team who can convert your vision into practice and can find the right team for the job.  Such experts can not only put your mind at rest on the organisational aspects and timeline of the day, but will provide you with continuous support and solutions.

  1. Integrate your traditions in the local culture

One of the beautiful things that I note in a destination wedding is how the couple manage to integrate the traditions from their native country with that of the destination wedding location.  As a wedding photographer I am always enthralled when I see unique decorations, rituals or food enshrined in a completely different environment.  This unique fusion creates a one of a kind experience for you and your wedding guests.

  1. Plan for weather variables

Each destination has its own unique climate, so be sure to consider such aspects when you are choosing your wedding day.  If you are for example visiting Malta, be aware that Malta enjoys mild weather year-round but I would probably try to avoid August due to the heat.  If you are planning your wedding in a lower demand period, like January and February, make sure to have an indoor backup plan in case of rain. I do have to say that indeed January and February, although pretty unconventional, make for wonderful weddings in view that during this period there are clouds present  which help create wonderful diffused and soft light.

  1. Consider organising or suggesting events for your guests

Make your destination wedding an interactive experience for your guests by incorporating opportunities for them to engage with the local culture. Consider organizing a traditional dance lesson, a cooking class, or a visit to a local market.  Such activities would ensure not only that your wedding guests enjoy to the full the days before or after the wedding day but also ensure a buildup to your wedding day.   In this way, guests travelling for your wedding day are also able to enjoy a holiday and your company.

  1. Capture the essence of your adventure

It would really be a shame if after going through all the details and logistics of your big day, you were to overlook the importance of hiring the right photographer who specializes in capturing destination weddings – someone who can capture the essence of your unique love story and the breathtaking beauty of your chosen destination. They should be able to navigate the local landscape and customs to create stunning images that reflect the spirit of your wedding.

Also as with any adventure, there will be unexpected moments along the way. As a couple you need to embrace these surprises and let them add to the authenticity of your destination wedding experience. A sudden downpour can inspire a dramatic photo shoot, or an unexpected encounter with locals can create a heartwarming memory.

  1. Savour the experience

Least but not least, remember to take time to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings and the joy of celebrating your love in a new and exciting place. A destination wedding is a chance to create lasting memories that will be cherished forever.

I hope you found these tips useful and insightful!  Should you wish to discuss any other aspect of your wedding in Malta or in Italy (areas in which I particularly specialise) do not hesitate to get in touch with me.
