Episode breakdown

Have a makeup trial

Maria Schartova from Allure says:

There have been a few brides who couldn’t have a trial (either they live abroad or they’ve chosen someone that they fully trust) – this is a small percentage, but most brides do want a trial!

It may be that you don’t wear lots of makeup or you have some skin imperfections and many times it’s that you want to meet your suppliers in person and get to know them ahead of time!

Your makeup artist will be with you for a large part of your morning, so knowing that you get along and they are accommodating is very important!

It all comes down to having peace of mind that your makeup will look great and will last, and that there is a good vibe between you and your makeup artist.

Prepare your skin the night before the wedding

Zoe Clark says:

Don’t drink too much alcohol the night before, even though it’s quite tempting. It will affect your sleep.

You could get something to help you sleep, if it won’t make you drowsy. A bad sleeping pattern may affect your skin.

Cleanse your face properly, put on your moisturiser, but don’t go mad with new facials too soon before the wedding.

Don’t drink too much water the night before, in case you’re up in the night going to the loo.

On the day, take it easy. Have a little bit of water, cleanse and tone.

For dry lips, Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream if you have a lot of dryness.

Consider your wedding morning timeline

Christine O’Connor says:

Your ceremony time – think about how many people you will have with hair and makeup, as well as your travel time to the ceremony.

When you book your hair and makeup artist, they will tell you how long each person will take!

Check with your photographer on their timeline. They may provide you with a schedule!

If you decide to do ‘first looks’, make sure to notify your glam team.

Your trial could affect your start time, especially if you weren’t able to have one.

With the running order, you don’t need to create an exact timeline – your makeup artist and hairstylist will work together on this.

The main decision to be made is who goes first (with makeup, it’s often a bridesmaid). Let them know they are up first!

Aim to exchange letters with your other half before you get your makeup done to avoid tear-stained makeup.

Something to do throughout the morning is to have fun!

Buy some of the products so you can keep them for touch ups

Laura Devides says:

Mini Charlotte Tilbury powder – four great colours and it doesn’t sit on the skin.

Wedding day lipstick on hand to touch up throughout the day – get the name from your makeup artist.

The best tip is to keep the lipstick in your Best Man’s pocket or in a bridesmaid’s bag.

If your skin is dry, then get some beauty mist – this will give your makeup a boost at the end of the night.

The most important thing: If you ever need to dry or touch your face after tears or dancing sweat, don’t dry, but rather dab!

A great summary

Sara Duffy says:

Get your trial booked in – 4-6 months before your wedding!

For the trial itself, be as prepared as possible. Have loads of photos with you, kind of like a moodboard of your wedding day. Try to create your hair look too (up or down, etc). If you’re planning on wearing tan on your wedding day, try to get that done 2 days or so before your trial.

Bring loads of inspo pics so help the makeup artist see the look you want to create! If you’re planning on having a lash lift, do let your makeup artist know.

Once you’ve had your trial, take those pictures and see what you think – let your makeup artist know if you want to make any changes.

Get into a good skincare routine!

Drink loads of water!

A HUGE thank you to Maria Schartova from Allure, Zoe Clark, Christine O’Connor, Laura Devides and Sara Duffy for sharing their expert advice!
